Walmart Souncheck: Mary J. Blige
A major 7.0 earthquake near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince has brought incredible tragedy to an island nation that has already suffered interminable sadness, injustice and instability. The United Nations is releasing $10 million immediately from its Central Emergency Relief Fund to assist Haiti.
Those concerned in Chicago are already reacting and spreading the word about raising relief funds—often through Twitter. Many Twitter users are also asking individuals to contribute through text-message campaigns. The Red Cross has already raised $800,000 for Haiti through a text-message campaign.
Here are some sample tweets on Haiti donations:

UNICEF has set up a special page for donations for the children of Haiti. In an e-mail, UNICEF’s Alissa Pinck reports: “UNICEF’s country office in Haiti and the regional office located in Panama is on the ground and have already deployed emergency teams to assess the situation and determine what the additional emergency needs are for the people of Haiti.”

Personally, I’d say the most direct way to contribute would be donating to Oxfam, which already has a team on the ground in Haiti. Via a press release, “200 people on the ground in Haiti and a team of 15 highly-experienced emergency specialists based in the capital will be responding with public health, water and sanitation services to prevent the spread of waterborne disease.”
To support Oxfam’s response in Haiti, donate to the Haiti Earthquake Response Fund. Donations can be made at www.oxfamamerica.org, by phone (1-800-77-OXFAM), by fax (1-617-728-2562) or by mail (Oxfam America, Haiti Earthquake Response Fund, PO Box 1211, Albert Lea, MN 56007-1211).

Katt WilliamsKatt Williams: Live reviews
now has his suspicions about law enforcement in Georgia following his latest run-in with authorities in a Walmart parking lot.
Initial reports suggested Williams and members of his entourage were involved in an incident with another crew outside the discount store in Newnan, Georgia, during which a shotgun was pulled.
Sphere: Related ContentToday is Black Friday. Shoppers were expected to line up early outside some stores as the nation’s retailers usher in the traditional start of the holiday shopping season with expanded hours and deep discounts on everything from toys to TVs.
A number of stores, including Walmart and many Old Navy locations, opened on Thanksgiving, hoping to make the most of the extra hours. Toys R Us opened most of its stores at midnight Friday.
Black Friday gets its name because it traditionally has been the day when huge
crowds push stores into “the black,” or profitability. But the
weekend doesn’t provide a forecast for the rest of the season, which
accounts for as much as 40 percent of annual sales and profits for many
stores.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer, has lures like deeply discounted TVs like 42-inch plasma Emerson HDTVs for $448, and other electronics like $78 Magnavox Blu-ray disc players, for the early morning specials that start at 5 a.m.
Toys R Us, which threw open its doors just after midnight Friday, five hours earlier than a year ago, is hawking 250 early morning specials that offer discounts of up to 65 percent on such items as VTech Learning Laptops and Little Tikes Jump ‘n Slide Bouncer.
Midprice department store operator Kohl’s Corp., which is set to open at 4 a.m., is offering deep discounts on cashmere sweaters, dresses and select kitchen appliances.
The nation’s largest electronics chain, Best Buy Co., will open its doors at 5 a.m. will have such deals as $999.99 Samsung 46-inch flat-panel TVs, a savings of $700; and Sony laptops for $479.97, a savings of $180.
With the early morning specials limited, crowd control is expected to
be a big focus for merchants this year in the aftermath of the death of
a Wal-Mart worker at a Long Island store during last year’s Black
Friday shopping madness.
Wal-Mart kept most of its stores open through the night to prevent such mad dashes.
Rival
Target Corp., which is opening at 5 a.m. Friday, is spreading hot items
throughout the store to make sure customers have space to shop, as it
has done in the past.
The promotional blitz typical for the
traditional start of the holiday shopping season has high stakes for
retailers who’ve suffered through a year of sales declines. It’s also
important for the broader economy, which could also use a kickstart
from consumer spending.
Retailers closely study buying patterns
for the Thanksgiving weekend to gauge shoppers’ mindset — what kinds of
items they’re buying, what deals are luring them.
Stores need to
perform well for the traditional start because chances are slim they’ll
be able to make up for lost sales for the rest of the season.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. — A Racine man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting an Evanston man in the parking lot of a Walmart in southeastern Wisconsin.
Mt. Pleasant police say 26-year-old Lennis B. Reynolds II was arrested and charged Saturday with attempted first-degree intentional homicide. He was in custody today in the Racine County Jail and unavailable for comment. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney.
Police told WISN-TV of Milwaukee that Reynolds went to the village’s police station with his parents Saturday to turn himself in.
The victim, a 31-year-old from Evanston, knows Reynolds, police said today.
The name of the victim was not being released today. Authorities say the 31-year-old Illinois man appeared to be the intended target when he was shot in the torso Friday in the Walmart parking lot. His condition wasn’t known on Sunday.

Ellis was shopping in the store with a cousin, and the two temporarily parted ways to find the shortest line. Seeing that the other line was moving faster, Ellis went to get in line with her cousin.
She was accused of cutting the line by a store employee, who then notified the security guard. According to Ellis, she was shoved by another customer, had her items pushed to the side and was shortchanged when she finally checked out. The police affidavit states that Ellis was belligerent, loud, abusive and cursing when she was told to leave the store by the assistant manager.

I mentioned the story before about Heather Ellis, the young woman who was threatened by the KKK after protesting about her arrest that took place in a Walmart store. The story was quite interesting in that Ellis now faces 15 years in prison for effectively cutting line at a Walmart. The unfortunate events occurred when Ellis was shopping with a cousin in Kennett, Missouri.
Heather and her cousin went to separate lines and when her cousin found the shorter line, Heather joined him. Ellis was then accused of cutting line by the person checking out customers, which led to an altercation. When Ellis was asked to leave the store, she argued with the managers, which led to the police being called. Ellis was eventually charged with disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and two counts of assaulting a police officer.
