3 Year Old Abandoned By Parents At His Own Birthday Party!!

March 17, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

MyFoxDetroit: WARREN, Mich. – Workers at the Caesarland were
shocked to find a three-year-old boy all alone on Saturday night. He was
left behind after his birthday party ended.

The birthday party was a celebration at a Caesarland in Warren complete
with pizza and presents. It was a Saturday filled with fun, that is
until the three-year-old found himself alone at about 9:00 p.m.

“The party ended at around 7:30 p.m.,” said Warren Police Commissioner
William Dwyer. “This is being treated as a criminal matter… There’s
neglect. There’s abandonment charges possibly coming.”

36 hours passed from Saturday night until Monday afternoon when the
boy’s father came back to Caesarland looking for him. Since Saturday,
the three-year-old boy has been in the custody of Child Protective
Services. Monday, the parents gave the following explanation to police.

“The father is indicating… that he thought that the mother had picked
up the three-year-old. They’re separated, but they live in the same
apartment complex. The mother is telling us that she thought that the
father or grandmother had taken the three-year-old home,” Dwyer said.

Oprah Winfrey & Monique Do Lunch!?

March 10, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Entertainment, Fab Events

Oprah Winfrey made a surprise visit to M.A.C.’s Aids benefit dinner in honor of Mo’nique, sending C-list actresses Jackee’ Harry and Shondrella Avery into hysterics.

A spy at Saturday’s M.A.C. cosmetics bash for Mo’Nique at Phillippe Chow in L.A. said that when Ms. Winfrey made a surprise appearance, attendees like Shondrella Avery and Jackee Harry “flipped out” and even “had tears in their eyes.”

“The ladies really couldn’t believe she was at the same party,” the source says. But ever the diva, Mo stole back the limelight when she insisted the entire Parisian-themed luncheon area be turned into a dance floor when the guests finished eating. She then requested that Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” be turned on full blast.

“Mo’Nique started a conga line that went throughout the restaurant and eventually led out to the valet parking area,” the partygoer says. “The ladies, who were all decked in pearls and white gloves, were really getting down.”

Victims of Cicero fire memorialized

February 20, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Allison Gist slowly made her way out of the church where a service was held Saturday for her three children and two grandchildren, all killed in a Cicero fire a week earlier.

Every few feet, she was stopped by well-wishers offering hugs, condolences and envelopes.

“I didn’t know everyone cared like that,” said Gist before getting into a long white limousine headed toward the traditional post-funeral meal. “You never know how much everyone cares until something like that.”

The fire killed seven people. At the Second Baptist Church of LaGrange on Saturday, large pictures of five of the victims stood in front of the pulpit: siblings Sallie Gist, 19, and twins Elijah and Elisha Gist, 16; and Sallie’s two children, Rashon Gist Reed, 3, and Brian Gist Reed, just 3 days old.

The fire started in the back porch of a home at 3034 S. 48th Ct. in Cicero last Sunday morning. Investigators have yet to determine a cause.

Elijah Grays, the father of Sallie, Elijah and Elisha Gist, got to Saturday’s service about 45 minutes early and smoked a cigarette outside.

“I’m trying to hold up,” he said. “It’s a hard situation.”

The Gists were well-known in LaGrange’s tightly-knit African-American community, where they lived for many years. Soon, the small brick church with blue awnings brimmed with life.

Pews filled and extra chairs were hastily unfolded to line the aisles on the church’s main floor and in the balcony. People stood shoulder-to-shoulder in whatever space was left, and the crowd spilled down the church’s front steps to the front door.

Among those attending were several area ministers and U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.).

Sobs, occasional laughter, shouts of praise and a gospel-laden organ accompanied songs, poems and memories from friends and relatives of the five young people.

“We can’t do anything about the length of our life, but we can do something about the width and breadth of our life,” said Karen Brown, a teacher at Lyons Township High School, where Elisha Gist was a student. “While her life may have been short, it was wide and it was deep.”

The service lasted about two hours and afterward, family members seemed buoyed by the outpouring of love and concern.

“It helped us very much to have so much support of the neighborhood, the community, the schools,” Grays said. “It doesn’t take the pain away quickly, but it makes me feel better.”

Amy Smith was among several young people who wore T-shirts emblazoned with the victim’s names, pictures and phrases like “Gone But Never Forgotten.” The service had crystallized memories of so many hours spent with Sallie, Elijah and Elisha.

“Just the things we used to do, hang out, watch movies,” said Smith, 23, her eyes red. “This is a tragedy that shouldn’t have ever happened.

Also killed in the fire were Byron Reed, 20, Sallie Gist’s boyfriend and the father of Rashon and Brian, and Tiera Davidson, 18, a family friend.

On Saturday afternoon, a service was held for Reed at Carter Funeral Chapels on the city’s South SideSouth Side reviewsSouth Side reviews. His children and Sallie Gist also were memorialized at the service.

Reed’s mother, Shilla Newton, said before the service that her family was comforted by their spiritual faith.

“Our family recognizes that when things like this happen, God has a purpose,” she said.

Daley says no connection between meeting and Scott’s suicide

January 30, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Mayor Richard Daley angrily denied Saturday that his longtime friend Michael Scott’s suicide was related to an investigation into the ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews school board president’s use of a district-issued credit card or a City Hall meeting set up to talk about the probe.

The denial marked the first time the Daley administration publicly acknowledged that top aide Jacquelyn Heard had scheduled the meeting with Scott about the credit card inquiry for the day Scott was found dead in November of what was ruled a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At the time, Daley said little about the hours before Scott’s death. Police also denied media attempts to get more information about their investigation of Scott’s suicide.

Behind the scenes, however, the mayor’s office told police about the meeting Heard had set up with Scott to discuss the probe by the Chicago Public Schools inspector general into Scott’s use of a taxpayer-funded credit card to pay for travel, meals, gifts and artwork.

Saturday’s disclosure adds a new element of controversy to the mysterious Scott story.

Before Scott’s death, the Tribune sought records about his use of the credit card to pay for a 2016 Olympics bid trip to Copenhagen.

The Tribune also published several stories last year related to Scott’s key role on Chicago’s Olympic committee and the real estate dealings of his company.

And earlier this month, the Tribune reported investigators from the inspector general’s office were scheduled to interview Scott on Nov. 20, four days after he died.

On Saturday, Heard said she called Scott the morning of Nov. 15 and made an appointment to meet the next morning with Scott to talk about district Inspector General James Sullivan’s ongoing inquiry.

But before that meeting could take place, Chicago police found Scott’s body in shallow water near a River North bridge. Later, authorities declared Scott died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Daley insisted Saturday that the series of events are unconnected.

“It had nothing to do with it. It had nothing to do with it,” the mayor said at a news conference after he dedicated a new senior citizen housing development in the Kelvyn Park neighborhood. “They’re trying to say that Michael Scott committed suicide over that. I mean, you people are just – I guess you want to dig him out of the grave or something. It had nothing to do with it. If you could predict why someone committed suicide, you’d be the greatest psychiatrist in the world. It had nothing to do with Michael’s death, suicide.”

The mayor also chastised the media, saying reporters are acting irresponsibly while trying to ascribe motives to Scott’s actions. The Sun-Times first reported Heard’s scheduled meeting with Scott.

“You people wish it had something to do with his suicide. I think you’re trying to throw him over the ridge or something, over the mountain,” Daley told reporters.

But he also insisted Scott would have been made to answer for any credit card irregularities.

“The credit card, that’s all it was. It wasn’t much, when you look at it,” Daley said. “But, again, that doesn’t — I don’t condone it. He can be accountable. If he was lying, he’d be accountable for it.”

Heard said her conversation with Scott the day before his death was “routine.” The credit card investigation was in its early stages, Heard said, and Scott did not seem at all worried about meeting the next day to discuss it.

“I didn’t know if anything that I was hearing was true. . . . I didn’t detect anything about him that could lead me to believe he had any concern about anything,” Heard said.

Chicago police declared Scott’s death a suicide based largely on physical evidence. No note was ever recovered. And since making the ruling, Supt. Jody Weis has maintained that police do not know — and might not ever know — what led to his decision.

A law enforcement source said Saturday that Scott also had recently gotten word that he had lost a consulting job.

But neither the Heard conversation nor the loss of the job was enough to suggest this might have contributed to his suicide, the source said.

Tribune reporter Hal Dardick contributed.

Exelon says it’ll join Illinois’ FutureGen Alliance

January 30, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Exelon Corp. announced Saturday that it plans to join the FutureGen Alliance, an organization developing an experimental clean-coal power plant in eastern Illinois.

The support from one of the nation’s largest power generators is an encouraging sign that plans for building the plant near Mattoon are coming along.

The U.S. Department of Energy had agreed to allow coal and power companies to continue developing the project, but final approval is expected in February. The agency had said the developers need to find a way to cut costs and to bring in more partners.

“We are extremely pleased to have one of America’s largest utilities join FutureGen. Exelon will bring significant industry support to the project and will further strengthen the Alliance team,” said FutureGen Alliance Chief Executive Officer Michael Mudd in a statement Saturday. “Together, we will be in a position to deliver the next generation of low carbon energy technology to Illinois and the world.”

Mudd has said that his goal is to increase the number of companies involved in the project. Some of those already involved include St. Louis-based Peabody Energy Corp., Anglo American of the United Kingdom and Wyoming-based Rio Tinto Energy America.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., announced ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews-based Exelon’s involvement at a news conference Saturday in Chicago.

“FutureGen will be the first facility of its kind to demonstrate the latest technology in electric power generation while capturing and safely storing greenhouse gas emissions,” Quinn said in a statement.

Durbin was among those who fought to keep FutureGen alive after the Bush administration scrapped the project due to cost concerns. A congressional auditor later said the Bush administration’s cost estimates were based on false projections.

The plant would use coal while removing the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and storing it underground.

Exelon Chairman and CEO John Rowe said it is important to find ways to cut emissions.

“Coal plays an enormously important role in our nation’s energy supply, so it is critical that we explore the most promising technologies for reducing – and even eliminating – greenhouse gas emissions at coal-fired power plants,” Rowe said in a statement.

REI Lincoln Park celebrates Yoga Day USA

January 25, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

yoga-52It seems in an ideal world everyone would take up yoga. For the sake of the mind and body, experienced yogis and novices alike joined in on Chicago’s own celebration of Yoga Day USA on Saturday. On the second floor of REI Lincoln Park, the mats were rolled out, the shoes came off and the calmness settled in. Free classes were offered throughout the day by four Chicago-based studios, including Yogaview Chicago, Tejas Yoga, Self Centered Yoga and Moksha Yoga. In addition, Whole Foods and public relations representatives for solixir—a new all natural botanical beverage–provided some much needed nourishment after classes. Expert instructors were on hand to answer questions about practicing yoga, and visitors could enter their name in a drawing for raffle prizes from the studios. Various types of yoga were taught, from the more basic Hatha to the low intensity Gentle. New enthusiasts heard again and again about the benefits of yoga including stress and pain relief, weight management, increased strength and better flexibility.yoga-31

Yoga Day USA was created by Yoga Alliance, a nonprofit organization that provides support to yoga teachers across the country. Claire Hurwitz, REI’s outreach specialist and events coordinator, began contacting studios three months ago to participate in the event in hopes of bringing the benefits of yoga to a wider community. “It’s all about making yoga more accessible to people,” says Hurwitz. “The world is a stressful place. Let off some steam.” While many Chicagoans attended to get their feet wet in a new hobby or fulfill that New Year’s resolution of being more active, some already believe in the life-changing power of yoga. Yogaview instructor Emily Robinson says, “It gives you a better awareness of your body and gets you in tune with yourself. The first time I did it, I felt my life changed dramatically.”

yoga-11Although the date of next year’s Yoga Day USA has not been determined, it’s not too late to get involved. To learn more about the studios at the event, visit tejasyogachicago.com, yogaview.com, mokshayoga.com, or selfcenteredyoga.com. When police arrived, they discovered three male teens with gunshot wounds, Alfaro said. Conditions on the victims were not available, but they all were taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment, he said.

McCain was shot in the head, police said.  An 18-year-old suffered gunshot wounds to his back and arm and a 15-year-old was shot in the left arm, Alfaro said.

The teens were standing on a corner when an unknown suspect or suspects opened fire in their direction, Alfaro said.

No one is in custody in the shooting. Police are investigating.

Oh deer! 10-to-12 point buck breaks into Ill. home

January 24, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

BELLEVILLE — An Illinois man says it didn’t take him long to decide not to mess with the uninvited, antlered guest he found in his kitchen.

Belleville resident Mark Page and his wife were sleeping Saturday when the sound of breaking glass and — was that hooves? — woke them up.

Page went downstairs to find a 10-to-12 point buck in the kitchen with its head in the sink.

He says he looked at the animal for “not even a fraction of a second” before turning tail and heading back upstairs. He says he doesn’t mess with deer, especially big ones.

The animal also was spooked and barreled through a closed window to escape.

Page says the deer jumped through a different window to get into his home.

He says the animal was injured, but police couldn’t find it.

Victims in plane crash were both from Florida

Two Florida men were identified today as the individuals who died in a plane crash Saturday night near the far west suburb of Sugar Grove.

The fatalities are Drago Strahija, 32, of Lake Worth, Fla., and Gary Bradford, 37, of Hollywood, Fla., said Kane County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler. Officials believe Bradford, who was a trained and licensed pilot, was flying the plane; Strahija was not a licensed pilot.

About 7 p.m. Saturday residents saw a ball of fire and the sheriff’s office received a 911 call, Gengler said. Emergency crews found the plane had struck the ground and debris had hit a home near Illinois Highway 47 and Old Oaks Road, in Sugar Grove Township.

It appears that the plane, a twin-engine Piper Aerostar 601P (here’s a photo of a similar model), had travelled from Texas, spent one night in Aurora and was travelling to Denver, said Pam Sullivan, a National Transportation Safety Board senior air safety investigator. The plane took off about 6:52 p.m. from the Aurora Airport, which is about two miles away, Sullivan said.

The plane’s tail number is N222AQ, according to the Federal Aviation Administration; it is registered to ENS Corporation in Hollywood, Fla. According to FAA records, the plane was manufactured in 1974.

Although it was foggy last night, no one else flying last night reported any problems because of weather and Bradford was instrument-rated for flying in weather, Sullivan said. But she would not say what might have caused the crash.

Witnesses, including Sugar Grove Fire Chief Marty Kunkle, who lives nearby, reported that there were loud engine noises before the crash.

“I knew it didn’t seem quite right,” said Kunkle, who at first thought that the plane had crashed on his own property. When Kunkle ran outside, he saw a “very large” debris field, with about 10 separate fires burning. The fires were extinguished within about 15 minutes.

On Saturday, Sullivan had described the crash as a “high-velocity impact” and that the plane “was broken into many pieces.”

There was very little damage to the home hit by the debris, which hit a corner of the home’s garage, Gengler said Saturday. There were two adults and two children inside the home, but no one was injured, he said.

The impact downed power lines and there was a large swath of debris from the impact of the plane, which was nearly completely destroyed, said Gengler.

Route 47 was closed during the investigation, but officials re-opened the road about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Gengler said.

2 die in Sugar Grove plane crash

January 24, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Two men were killed Saturday night when a small, twin-engine plane crashed in a subdivision near Waubonsee Community College in the far west suburb of Sugar Grove.

The two fatalities — both men – were in the plane, said Kane County Sheriff’s spokesman Pat Gengler.

Gengler said at about 7 p.m. residents saw a ball of fire and the sheriff’s office received a 911 call. Responders found the plane had struck the ground and debris had hit a home at Route 47 and Old Oaks Road.

There was very little damage to the home, where two adults and two children were inside, but the debris hit a corner of a garage, he said. No one in the home was injured, he said.

Cathy Doyle was in her home with three other family members when the debris struck her garage. In a telephone interview Saturday night she said she was thankful they all were safe.

Doyle said she was still shaken up from the accident several hours after the crash occurred, especially after she was told there were two fatalities.

“It’s nerve racking. My family is all safe, thank the Lord,” she said, catching her breath.

The impact downed power lines and there was a large swath of debris from the impact of the plane, which was nearly completely destroyed, said Gengler.

Pam Sullivan, an NTSB senior air safety investigator, said one of the people on the plane was a certified pilot but the other man on the plane did not have a pilot’s license.

Sullivan said officials expected to release the names of the victims Sunday. She said the plane was a twin-engine Piper Aerostar, but officials did not release the tail number of the plane.

She said the Aurora Airport is about 2 miles away.

Sullivan called the crash a “high-velocity impact” and that the plane “was broken into many pieces.”

She said officials planned to continue their investigation on Sunday.

The plane was en route from Aurora to the Denver area, according to an FAA recorded message.

Ken Voight, who lives about 1/2 mile from where the plane went down, said the plane went down near Route 47, across the street from the north entrance to Waubonsee Community College.

The residence hit by the plane is a large home at the corner of Route 47 and Old Oaks Road, with an address of 43W420 Old Oaks Road in Sugar Grove township.

Voight said he was sitting down to eat dinner when he heard an airplane flying ”very low” over his home. He said while planes routinely fly overhead from the airport, this plane appeared to have engine problems.

“This one came much lower than normal, really loud engine noise like [the pilot] was really trying to get the engines to go, and then maybe 10 seconds later we heard and felt the impact. … It shook our house.” said Voight. “It flew so low over our house that my wife and I both ducked our heads.”

Voight said that after the explosion he and a neighbor jumped into a car and drove to where the noise had come from. He said most of the debris was in a vacant lot across the street from the north entrance of the college.

“All we saw was a lot of small fires widely scattered, like campfires,” Voight said.

Voight said another neighbor told him that the plane appeared to circle overhead once, and as it was circling overhead again the plane went down. Voight said there was fog in the area.

Route 47 was closed during the investigation, but officials re-opened the road about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Gengler said.
