Boy and his dog die in Minooka retention pond

January 10, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Ryan Rames took his beloved dog Sammie for a walk as he normally would on a Saturday morning in his neighborhood in Minooka, southwest of Joliet.

The year-old Yorkie-Shih Tzu mix weighed only 8 pounds, and his 11-year-old master made sure she got her exercise no matter how bad the weather. When Ryan didn’t return after 45 minutes, his family set out to find him, then called authorities.

Searchers quickly spotted footprints and pawprints through the snow-covered ground leading to a large, L-shaped retention area down the street from the family’s house on the 1400 block of Hauby Court. By 1:45 p.m. or so, divers had pulled out the bodies of both Ryan and the dog.

The boy’s mother, Danielle Vieshov, said she thinks the dog went onto the retention pond and Ryan went after her.

“He took her out no matter what. He loved that dog. He went after instead of just letting her go in,” she said Saturday evening between tears.

RYANRAMES200.jpgGrundy County Coroner John W. Callahan said it appeared the ice gave way as the boy and his dog neared the center of the pond.

The boy had the dog on leash when he left yesterday, as he always did, said his stepfather, Will Vieshov. The leash was the extendable kind. He said the family thinks the boy must have lost grip on the handle, allowing the dog to run off, then chased after Sammie as she went into the pond.

The Vieshovs and other residents of the Lakewood Trails subdivision questioned why aerators in the pond were turned on this winter, leaving some of the water unfrozen. In previous winters, the aerators were off and the pond was solid ice, said Lakewood Trails resident Rico Soave. The pond also had a couple inches of snow on it.

“I know he shouldn’t have been out on the ice, but I also know the pumps shouldn’t have been on in the winter,” Vieshov said. “If those pumps wouldn’t have been on, would my son be here now, laughing and playing Wii bowling? There’s no way to know.”

Ryan, a fifth-grader at Minooka Intermediate School, ran cross country for the first time in the fall, but family said his real passion was amateur wrestling. “He was only 58 pounds, but he could kick some butt,” his mother said.

“He had such a good heart. He loved everybody,” Vieshov said. “He was so fun to be around, he just lit up every room he entered. He had no cares in the world.”

Vieshov also offered some advice for parents.

“Just treat every day like it’s your last. Always tell your kids you love them when they go out the door because you never know if they’re going to come back,” she said.

Booted car stolen from Evanston street

November 23, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

A vehicle with a “Denver Boot” attached to one of the wheels disappeared from an Evanston street over the weekend, police said today.

A tow truck operator attached the Denver Boot to the wheel of a 1994 Toyota in the 1700 block of Grey Avenue in Evanston on Saturday evening because the owner of the vehicle had outstanding parking tickets. But on Sunday the vehicle and boot were both gone, said police.

They said it is impossible to drive the vehicle with the boot on it and that they do not know how the vehicle was moved with the boot still attached to the wheel.

Police said they did not know where the vehicle is, but are investigating the incident as a theft of a Denver Boot.

SNL Bashes Obama, Stimulus, Healthcare and Cash for Clunkers

November 22, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

NBC’s "Saturday Night Live" really went after President Obama in its opening sketch Saturday evening.

Not only that, his policies involving economic stimulus, healthcare reform, and Cash for Clunkers were also exposed as having absolutely no positive or future impact on unemployment.

The setup was Obama, played by Fred Armisen, doing a press conference with Chinese President Hu Jintao, played by Bill Hader.

As Jintao, through interpreter played by Nasim Pedrad, realized how much money the United States owes China, he questioned how we were going to pay them back if Obama’s policies "to save money involve spending even more money."

Realizing he’s being lied to, Jintao asked Obama to kiss him – "I like to be kissed when someone is doing sex to me!" (video embedded below the fold courtesy Story Balloon):

Nice bit, but the Chinese President continuously bending over was a bit overdone.

That said, it is nice to see the folks at "SNL" continuing to bash the man NBC helped become President.

3 women shot to death as they sat in car with kids

November 08, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

EAST ST. LOUIS — Three women were shot to death at an East St. Louis gas station as they sat in a car with two children, police said.

Neither of the children, ages 1 and 8, were injured in the shooting Saturday evening, said East St. Louis Police detective Ken Berry. One suspect was in custody but had not yet been charged Sunday, and the shooter was still at large.

Illinois State Police believe the suspect fled in a white 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis with an Illinois license plate of X101862.

The women were sitting in a car at Crown Food Market about 9:30 p.m. Saturday when a shooter approached and opened fire, police said. He then fled.

The victims have been identified as Canikia HarveyHarvey reviewsHarvey reviews, 26, Raykel Gathing, 26, Jaimaca McDaniel, 24, all of East St. Louis, according to St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone.

An employee who answered the phone at the gas station Sunday said the three women were regulars and never seemed to be involved in any trouble.

Flowers have been placed at the gas pump where the women’s car was parked, he said, and no one was using the pump.

Willie Holmes, McDaniel’s father, said she has three sons. He said the three victims were all good friends.

A relative of Gathings, Chamethele McKinney, said the shooter should be harshly punished.

“There were kids in that car,” she said. “He showed no remorse.”

Police have not determined a motive for the shooting. Illinois State Police are assisting in the investigation.

The killings bring the number of homicides in East St. Louis this year to 27. There were 19 in 2008.

WLS-TV to try for final fix of high-def signal

October 30, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

WLS-Ch. 7 will upgrade its signal on Saturday evening, hoping to reach the last remaining viewers who couldn’t get the station’s broadcast after the June transition from analog to digital broadcasts.

The signal upgrade, which will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, is meant to be a permanent fix to a problem that has pestered WLS since the summer.

“We don’t think it’s a huge number (of affected people), but we don’t really know,” said Emily Barr, president and general manager at WLS. “We take calls regularly. The calls have lightened up as the summer’s gone on, but we do know there are people out there who have not been able to receive us despite their best efforts.”

Viewers who have been receiving WLS don’t need to do anything, nor do cable TV and satellite subscribers, Barr said. But those who haven’t been getting the signal or experience spotty reception must do a hard reset, also known as a double rescan, of their converter box or television. This should be done after 5 p.m. on Saturday. Instructions for a double rescan can be found at http://www.dtv.gov/rescan.html.

The Federal Communications Commission had given WLS permission in early September to effectively double its power on a temporary basis. Since then, the FCC has approved a request by WLS to pick up a second frequency, adding Ch. 44 on UHF to its current home at Ch. 7 on VHF. The additional frequency will be translated to Ch. 7.

Before the digital transition on June 12, WLS had been at Ch. 52 on UHF. The signal upgrade required significant new construction, including securing additional space in the Sears Tower, Barr said.

Teen pilot: ‘Miracle’ he walked away from fiery crash

October 19, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Entertainment, Fab Local News

A LaGrange senior says he’s “a little bit stiff” but otherwise OK after he crashed his small plane near Peoria over the weekend.

“I’m doing fine. I’m a little bit stiff, but other than that, I’m not hurt,” Scott Hall, 17, told WBBM-AM. “I’m a bit shaken up but not hurt at all. Hall, who says he’s had his pilot’s license for six months, had just
taken off from Peoria International Airport Saturday evening when his
Piper Cherokee experienced engine problems at around 4,000 feet.

Hall tried to reach Mt. Hawley Airport but clipped a light pole and
crashed on a highway about 10 miles from the Peoria airport, according
to Peioria Fire Department Division Chief Greg Walters.

Hall walked away seconds before the plane burst into flames.

“I don’t think anything could’ve gone any better than it did,” Halll, a
senior at Lyons Township High school, told the station. “I truly
believe it was a miracle that nobody was hurt.”

Authorities closed the road for about two hours while firefighters doused the blaze.

PEORIA — Police say a pilot flying a small plane near Peoria walked away unharmed after a fiery crash.

Peoria Police Department spokesman Doug Burgess says there were no injuries in Saturday evening’s crash.

The pilot, 17-year-old Scott Hall, who the Peoria Journal-Star identified as being from LaGrange, says he’s fine but his Piper Cherokee is totaled.

The crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. in a four-lane road. Hall says he took off from Peoria’s airport and crashed about 10 miles northeast of there.

Witness Matt Dalpiaz of Peoria says the plane appeared to clip a light pole and skidded across the road.

Authorities closed the road for about two hours while firefighters doused the blaze.
