Goose Island’s new beer flies (bottle) free

February 02, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

gl_left_imgLast night a group of beer-lovers and eco-friendly folks gathered at Uncommon Ground for Goose Island’s unveiling of its new beer, Green Line Pale Ale. As a Green Line rider, I can tell you that the beer is a lot smoother than the eponymous El route. It’s tasty, citrusy and a bit less hoppy than an average pale ale. Actually, the beer was named for its “green” (as in, environmental) qualities: After years of cringing at plastic-cup and glass-bottle waste, Goose Island brewmasters Greg and John Hall created Green Line as its first bottle-free beer to be served at bars around town.

In order to go green, Goose Island traced a 312 keg’s carbon footprint, and with that information, they implemented a slew of green initiatives timed with the debut of Green Line, including investing in a new grain mill; investing in local hops (for now, the beer uses northwest coast hops); reducing natural gas usage in the brewery; and reducing the amount of energy and malt-use.

What do you think? Would you drink a beer just because it’s environmentally friendly? Either way, I guess a brewery can take a chance when it’s the 23rd largest beer producer (yowza!).

Daley taps former buildings chief to head CPS board

January 28, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Mayor Richard Daley on Thursday turned to a former buildings commissioner to follow Michael Scott as ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews Board of Education president, continuing his trend of dipping into a pool of trusted problem solvers to fill high-profile posts.

The mayor called the appointment of Mary Richardson-Lowry “bittersweet,” recalling his long friendship with Scott, who died in November of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

One of Richardson-Lowry’s first orders of business is to review school district spending.

Scott had been the subject of an internal investigation that included his use of his taxpayer-paid credit card for thousands of dollars in meals, travel and other expenses. The Tribune previously has disclosed that Scott improperly used his board credit card to pay for a trip last fall to Copenhagen to lobby for Daley’s failed bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

“I’d ask Mary to immediately get on top of this so all our taxpayers see that they are all protected,” Daley said at a City Hall news conference to introduce Richardson-Lowry.

A product of the Compton, Calif., public school system, Richardson-Lowry, 53, said she would call on her experience succeeding in that tough city to help guide her in dealing with the high rates of poverty and violence Chicago schoolchildren face.

“I grew up in an environment where I had to walk through gang territories to get to school. I know what that’s like,” Richardson-Lowry said.

“We have to work hard to provide the best possible classroom opportunities for children within the school system,” she added. “And when we do that and create, to the extent possible within our experience, some safe environment, everything is possible.”

Richardson-Lowry began her city career in 1987 as an assistant corporation counsel, then worked as a senior supervising attorney and an assistant to Daley before taking over the Buildings Department in 1998.

Her tenure was marked by a series of deadly building accidents. Glass from a cracked window at the CNA Tower killed a woman in 1999. Scaffolding broke at the John Hancock Building shortly before Richardson-Lowry left in 2002, killing three people in cars below.

Educators offered a mixed reaction Thursday.

“Schools are not McDonald’s, and children are not hamburgers. This is not a corporate enterprise designed to maximize profit,” said Rico Gutstein, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Education. “What it should be is a system that is committed to the full human potential of educating its students.”

But with educators, such as Chief Education Officer Barbara Eason-Watkins, helping make the education decisions, others said it’s more important to have an effective manager running the board.

“She’s been a part of the administration in the past as a buildings commissioner, so she knows the inner workings of City Hall and the vision that the mayor has for the city,” said Juan Rangel, executive director of the United Neighborhood Organization, the city’s largest charter schools operator.

Richardson-Lowry’s multiple positions with the administration mirror the careers of many lieutenants Daley has called on repeatedly to fill top spots at City Hall.

Scott wore several hats for the mayor, serving as Chicago Park District president and on boards for the Regional Transportation Authority and Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, as well as twice heading the school board.

Gery Chico was Daley’s chief of staff and school board president and now is park board president. And school district CEO Ron Huberman previously headed the CTA and the city Office of Emergency Management and Communications, in addition to serving as Daley’s chief of staff.

Drivers may get 1 parking meter grace period a year

January 13, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

The Tribune’s Clout Street reports: Drivers would get one five-minute parking meter grace period per year under a measure Mayor Richard Daley introduced today.

If the City Council approves, drivers would be able to successfully fight one ticket per year if it’s issued within five minutes of the meter or pay ticket running out.

Daley administration officials said City Hall always has instructed employees issuing parking tickets not to cite cars when the meter has just expired.

“This codifies it, it’s a valid defense and we will withdraw (the ticket),” said Bea Reyna-Hickey, Commissioner of the Department of Revenue, at a news conference with the mayor after today’s City Council meeting.

Shooting victim walks into Cicero Town Hall

January 08, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

The victim of a gang-related shooting walked into the Cicero Town Hall bleeding and asking for help earlier this week, much to the surprise of employees and others inside, a town official said today.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with the shooting.

A 19-year-old Cicero man was shot about 8:50 a.m. Monday while riding in a car at Laramie Avenue and Cermak Road, a few blocks west of the Town Hall.

The driver of the bullet-riddled Mercedes-Benz in which the 19-year-old was riding decided to take him to the Town Hall thinking he would be able to get faster medical help, said Cicero spokesman Ray Hanania.

The driver, believed to be an acquaintance of the victim, dropped him on the sidewalk at the west of the building, which has no public access. The victim was able to make his way to the main entrance where he walked inside clutching his abdomen.

“There was blood everywhere,” Hanania said. “People thought he had been shot outside Town Hall.”

The victim was assisted immediately and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the back.

Omar Olivarez, 18, of Cicero turned himself in to Cicero police Monday. He was charged Wednesday night with one count each of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, Hanania said.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Maywood Tuesday Jan. 12.

Police are still investigating, but witnesses said the shooting just started suddenly at the intersection. It is not yet known if shots were fired from both of the vehicles involved or just one, Hanania said.

“They just started shooting,” he said.

At NIU, Harris was named honorable-mention All-America in his senior year after averaging 24 points a game. He still holds the school’s back-to-back game scoring record, with 35 points against Long Beach State University at Madison Square Garden in New York and 42 points against Virginia Commonwealth University.

Harris was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the seventh round in 1973, but instead, played two seasons with the ABA’s San Diego Conquistadors.

Harris was also inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Historic Cuneo estate in Vernon Hills donated to Loyola

December 28, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

When the Rev. Michael Garanzini, Loyola University Chicago’s president, needed $15 million for a new classroom building, he turned to John Cuneo Jr., the Lake County businessman whose prominent family had a history of supporting the Catholic university.

Cuneo had something grander in mind.

He suggested giving the university the historic Cuneo Museum and Gardens in Vernon Hills, including the mansion’s art and furnishings, an adjacent 50 acres, and funds for upkeep of the property.

The gift from Cuneo, his wife, Herta, and the Cuneo Foundation, estimated at about $50 million, is the largest in the school’s history.

Loyola plans to develop the adjacent property to raise the funds needed for the classroom building on the university’s Lakeshore campus, to be named Cuneo Hall and expected to be completed in 2012.

Other revenue from the development will be used for student scholarships.

“What was a request for $15 million became a gift of $50 million, if you want to be crass about it,” Garanzini said. “He is making me work for it. He gets something out of it, too. He gets his mansion taken care of.”

The ownership change is expected to take place March 1.

Loyola has agreed to maintain the property for at least 20 years. Garanzini said the university will hold onto the vacant land “until the market is right.”

Cuneo suggested it could be ideal for an assisted living facility because elderly residents would be able to walk to the gardens.

Garanzini said Loyola plans to increase the use of the mansion for weddings and other special events, and is looking into ways to provide educational programs for Loyola students, particularly those studying the performing arts. The property, in the far northern suburbs, already is used as a concert venue in the summer.

New development could include a facility for graduate programs, Garanzini said. “We haven’t done all the studies yet, but we think there is a possibility that it could be an avenue for more activity for the university,” he said.

Garanzini has become close with the Cuneo family, even traveling with them as they traced their roots to Cuneo, Italy, several years ago. The family has supported Loyola since the 1940s, and John Cuneo Sr. in 1950 helped found the Stritch School of Medicine Annual Award Dinner,  an event that has become the school’s largest annual fundraiser.

Built in the early 1900s, the grand family mansion was first the home of Samuel Insull, the founder of Commonwealth Edison Co. John Cuneo Sr., who made his fortune in the printing business, bought it in 1937.

Cuneo’s wife, Julia Shepard, lived there until her death in 1990.

The mansion-turned-museum opened to the public in 1991, attracting about 10,000 visitors a year.

The home houses the family’s collection of antiques, paintings and other works of art.

There is a grand hall surrounded by balconies and a sun porch that was converted to a chapel. A gazebo in the garden was used in the filming of “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

Cuneo Jr., the owner of Hawthorn Corp., which rents elephants and other animals to circuses, said he gave a lot of thought to the future caretaker of his childhood home.”I wanted to make sure this house was left in good, safe hands,” Cuneo, 78, said. “I wanted it done right and these are the kinds of people who can do that type of thing.”

New trial for ex-Streets and San commissioner

December 22, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

CT SANCHEZ_HeadShot.jpgA federal judge today ordered a new trial for former Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Al Sanchez, the highest-ranking Daley administration official convicted in the hiring investigation of City Hall.

Sanchez, convicted by a jury in March for his role in rigging city hiring, had sought a new trial on grounds that authorities failed to disclose one of the prosecution witnesses was a high-ranking gang leader and drug dealer.

U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman ruled the government was obligated to disclose their witness’ prior gang activity and arrest record. Prosecutors and FBI agents have acknowledged that defense lawyers were not made aware of the extent of the witness’ criminal ties but said that wasn’t a sufficient reason for a new trial.

But Gettleman ordered a new trial for Sanchez and a co-defendant, Aaron Del Valle, saying the information could have been used by defense lawyers to impeach the prosecution witness.

(To read Gettleman’s opinion, go HERE.)

“Based on these findings, this court has lost confidence in the integrity of the verdict, convicting these defendants,” Gettleman wrote.

U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald’s office declined to comment.

Sanchez today said he looked forward to a new trial and proving his innocence.

“I’ve always maintained I’ve done nothing wrong,” he told a Tribune reporter in the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse immediately after the ruling. “I worked hard for the city.”

No new trial date has been set.

MJ sues Jewel and Dominick’s for trademark infringement

December 21, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

The next time local grocers Jewel and Dominick’s want to salute an accomplishment by Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan, they might want to just send him a card instead.

Jordan, who led the Bulls to six championships and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame last September, filed lawsuits Monday against both grocery store chains for two separate ads celebrating the living legend that Jordan considers an infringement on his trademark and business interests.

The full-page ads ran in a special commemorative issue of Sports Illustrated magazine dedicated to Jordan and his career.

Both suits, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, claim the ads, each
congratulating Jordan on his long list of achievements, were actually
clever and unauthorized ways of linking the former league-leading
scorer to their stores.

In the Dominick’s ad, for example, the top half of the ad congratulates
Jordan and features his trademark number, 23, while the bottom features
a coupon on a Rancher’s Reserve steak, a trademark of Dominick’s parent
company, Safeway.

Jordan was never contacted about the ad and would never be associated
with the Dominick’s steaks, as it would conflict with steakhouses and a
direct-mail steak business Jordan has lent his name to, the suit states.

In the Jewel ad, a pair of Jordan’s Air Jordan basketball shoes with
number 23 on the tongues sit below a message of support that ends with
Jewel’s “just around the corner” slogan.

Officials at both Jewel and Dominick’s couldn’t be reached for comment.
Jordan’s longtime attorney, Fred Sperling, declined to comment.

The suits seek unspecified damages, attorney fees and to bar either store from using Jordan’s name in future ads.

Police warn restaurants about string of burglaries

December 21, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Chicago Police warned today of a rash of at least a dozen robberies at restaurants spread throughout much of the West, North and Northwest sides.

The burglaries, which began in August and have continued into this month, have taken place when restaurants are closed, although the times have varied, police said. The burglar or burglars have removed safes, electronics and cash in the heists, police said in an alert issued by Belmont Area detectives today.

The burglaries have taken place in the Wood and Shakespeare police districts, which include parts of the West and Northwest sides; the Belmont, Lincoln and Town Hall police districts, which include parts of the North Side; and the Grand-Central District, which includes parts of the Northwest and West sides.

The burglars cut phone lines and make the security system useless, according to the alert. Although the location where the burglars entered the restaurants has varied, most of the burglaries have involved use of the restaurants’ rear doors, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala, in an e-mail.

Police do not have descriptions of the burglars or the vehicles they may have used in the incidents, according to the police alert. Police declined to say if they have found any of the safes stolen in the burglaries.

Addresses for where the burglaries took place were not immediately available.

Belmont Area detectives are leading the investigation because the first burglary took place there, Zala said. But Harrison and Grand-Central area detectives are also investigating.

Anyone with information that might help with the investigation of the burglaries — the dates of which were not provided by police — should call detectives. Belmont Area detectives are at 312-744-8263; Harrison Area, 312-746-8253; and Grand-Central Area, 312-746-8362.

Parking meter firm touts ‘improved’ system

December 21, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Fewer than 100 parking tickets have been automatically dismissed because of broken meters since the summer in ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews under a new customer-friendly program aimed at improving service, officials disclosed today.

The city and its private parking management contractors, Chicago Parking Meters LLC and LAZ Parking, recently implemented enhancements geared toward making on-street parking easier and penalties for violations more fair.

The moves come on the heels of a poor start when the parking consortium took over the city’s 36,000 parking meters in February in exchange for an upfront payment of more than $1 billion. The problems included thousands of broken meters and inaccurate parking signage that led to unwarranted tickets.

Parking officials recently met with City Hall, business leaders and neighborhood groups to seek feedback on continuing problems and needed changes.

“We listened, we learned and we believe their suggestions have greatly improved the system,” said Dennis Pedrelli, chief executive officer at Chicago Parking Meters, in a news release.

But some of the improvements cited are either not new measures or they reflect minor progress.

For instance, of the thousands of parking tickets issued daily, only 92 tickets for inoperable meters or broken pay-and-display boxes have been thrown out since late summer under an automatic-dismissal program, the company said.

In addition, a “new” feature called “portable time”–in which parking-payment stubs can be used in multiple parking locations in the same fee zone so long as the time has not expired–is not new.

Rather, the parking vendor has improved the wording on parking stubs to better inform drivers about the option.

Other “new” measures that have been in place for months include extended hourly parking limits near theaters, hospitals and other places; discounted monthly parking in city-owned lots; and early morning pre-payment at parking boxes.

Asked why the company was mounting a public relations campaign now, Chicago Parking Meters spokeswoman Avis LaVelle said, “We are at the end of installing the parking boxes and our listening tour, and we felt it was a good time to make sure the public is aware of the improvements.”

Death At A Funeral Trailer Feat. Chris Rock & Kevin Hart & Many More!

December 08, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Movies

Death At A Funeral is slated to be one of the biggest comedy movies to hit theaters Spring 2010. The movie is about a small funeral ceremony which turns into a comedic debacle of exposed family secrets and misplaced cadavers. With a All-Star African-American cast starring Martin Lawrence, Chris Rock, Regina Hall, Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan, Loretta Devine, Danny Glover, Columbus Short, and Zoe Saldana. It can’t get any better than this. After watching the trailer I was on the floor rolling, a few scenes had me in tears. Particular, the scene when they find out their father was on the “down low”.

Chuck Woolery Comes Out As Conservative, Jokes ‘I’ll Never Be Hired in Hollywood Again’

November 29, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

On Saturday’s Huckabee show on FNC, host Mike Huckabee interviewed gameshow host Chuck Woolery, who admitted to being conservative and voiced support for term limits, the Constitution, and tea party protesters. As the segment started, the former host of game shows Love Connection and Scrabble joked: "I’m now sacrificing my career coming out as a conservative. So I’ll never be hired in Hollywood again once they find out I’m doing it on your show."

I can actually remember that on Rush Limbaugh’s television show from the 1990s that he once played a clip from Scrabble in which host Woolery admitted to liking Limbaugh after the word "Limbaugh" was revealed as the answer to a word puzzle in which the clue was, "He’s been blamed for a lot of bad rush (Rush) hours." Woolery joked that the puzzle was made up by a "pinko commie," and declared, "I like Rush Limbaugh."

Below is a transcript of portions of the interview from the Saturday, November 28, Huckabee show on FNC:

MIKE HUCKABEE: Well, my first guest played the role of match maker on the popular game show Love Connection. … Well, the participants on his show didn’t always find love, and he didn’t have much affection for politicians who think they’re too good to get dumped. So, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Chuck Woolery. (AUDIENCE APPLAUSE) Hello, Chuck!

CHUCK WOOLERY: How are you? Nice to see you. And I think one of the most quotable, one of the most quotable lines from Love Connection is when a guy looked at a girl and he said, "I’ve seen better legs on a bucket of chicken."

HUCKABEE: Did he really say that?

WOOLERY: Yeah, he said that.

HUCKABEE: You’ve got to have had some incredible things you saw and heard over the course of doing that show.

WOOLERY: I did, and thank God I don’t have a very good memory.

HUCKABEE: Well, you know, talking about Love Connection, there’s a whole lot of people that are having a real hard time having a love connection with Congress right now. And, interestingly, Chuck, from what I tell, you’re one of them, a little disappointed in what you’re seeing.

WOOLERY: I’m one of the people who, you know, you keep talking about Senators and Congressmen are sacrificing for our country and giving up all their time. I’m now sacrificing my career coming out as a conservative. So I’ll never be hired in Hollywood again once they find out I’m doing it on your show.

(AUDIENCE APPLAUSE)

HUCKABEE: Yeah, that may, it may not be the conservative party, it may be being on my show that may kill your career.

WOOLERY: Whichever. I’m just taking every chance possible. The thing of it is, I believe that the word "career" and "politician" should never be linked together because, number one-

(AUDIENCE APPLAUSE)

WOOLERY: Well, it’s true. How many guys, how many, let me do a real quick little survey here. How many people here can leave their job for four years and then come back and everything’s just like it was? Okay. That’s why we have career politicians. They don’t have a job. They just are career politicians. They stay there forever. I mean, poor Senator Byrd, they wheeled him up there after 56 years. You know, at one time I’m sure he was vibrant, but, I think, after 12 years, his time was up.

HUCKABEE: You know, interestingly, when they asked him about being there 56 years, he says I look forward to the next 56, and I’m not making that up.

WOOLERY: No, no, Strom Thurmond said the same thing, his Republican counterpart, so – I’m not looking forward to it.

HUCKABEE: What about term limits, Chuck? Should we have limits on the length of time people can serve?

WOOLERY: Yes. I’m not sure how you get that done, but I tell you something, Congressmen should not be in there more than four years. They got to turn the people over because that power leads to corruption. And they can’t help it. It seduces them. (AUDIENCE APPLAUSE) The more, the more they get seduced, the more power they have, the longer they want to stay. They will do anything to keep that job. And the American people like you and me, I mean, we’re the only ones who can do anything about that. At this point, that’s it. We vote them out. I always say vote for a bad guy you don’t like and get rid of him in two years, just keep turning them over.

HUCKABEE: Yeah, it’s sort of like every appliance every now and then needs to have the handle pulled and it flushed to have fresh water come in. I’ll leave it at that as to the vivid picture people have.

WOOLERY: I really believe this. I think that’s absolutely true and it’s funny, too. … Here’s a deal. I think personally that Washington really needs to be afraid of us. Deathly afraid of the people.

(AUDIENCE APPLAUSE)

HUCKABEE: I love that. That’s right, Chuck.

WOOLERY: And right now, because of, because of the IRS, because of a lot of tools they have at their convenience that are power tools, they can drill us pretty good. We need to drill them so that they’re, and if they’re afraid, and if they’re afraid of us, they won’t use those tools.

HUCKABEE: And we saw the fear that they had of their people when they wouldn’t go to town hall meetings. They were scared to death of the tea party protesters, which I think was one of the great citizens uprisings in a lifetime. I’m grateful.

WOOLERY: It was. Linked with that, not only do I think they should not be able to serve more than four years or 12 years. I mean, the President only gets eight.

HUCKABEE: Yeah.

WOOLERY: So. The other thing is, no lawyers. If a guy is a lawyer and he’s running, or a woman, they shouldn’t be voted in. We have too many lawyers. There’s a practical reason. (AUDIENCE APPLAUSE) Here’s a practical reason. I loved it when [Congressman John] Dingell said, "Read the bill? Are you kidding? We never read the bill." They can’t read the bill. And these people would go to town hall meetings and they would have segments of the bill that they knew, and the Congressmen and Senators would go, "What?" They hadn’t got a clue what they were talking about. So then they’d go back and they’d read the bill and they would come back and try to defend it, and they still couldn’t understand it because lawyers writ it, wrote it, and they writ it, too. (AUDIENCE LAUGHTER) But lawyers, they can’t even understand what each other said.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HUCKABEE: We are back with Chuck Woolery. When we were talking before, Chuck, you outed yourself as a conservative. Now, it really is kind of unusual, at least we think of it, in the entertainment world for people to be openly conservative. What was that it that made you say, you know what, I think the conservative idea of government’s more for me?

WOOLERY: I have no idea. I honestly did not have one of those moments where everything changed and I fell in love. I don’t know. One thing I do remember is I was doing Home and Family with your producer, Woody Frasier. And I had to go in for a four-way bypass. And so I went to Cedar Sinai, and they wheeled me in the thing – well, after the surgery everybody was laughing, the doctors were laughing, the nurses. I’m in ICU recovering. And I said, "What is so funny?" as best I could say it. And they said, "Well, we sedated you and we were ready to do the bypass and you sat up and you said" – I had no idea I did this – he said, "You sat up and said, ‘I’m the only conservative in Southern California, and Bob Dole is running for President. If I die, someone has to promise me that they’ll vote for him,’" and I laid down. I had no idea I’d done it.

(AUDIENCE LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE)

HUCKABEE: There was a subconscious moment.

WOOLERY: Can you imagine you’re going into a life and death situation worried about Bob Dole? Give me a break!

HUCKABEE: What about the citizens? We mentioned the tea parties. You’ve seen this happen across the country. There’s been a contemptuous attitude from people like Nancy Pelosi, but do you think you’re seeing authentic, just, angst from citizens?

WOOLERY: Well, this certainly isn’t astroturf, is it? It’s a grassroots movement, and I think it has legs. I can only pray as a citizen myself that this gains momentum, and people really start to turn on their government. I really believe that. And when we say "turn on the government," that’s kind of a loaded way to look at it. They have become arrogant and so disconnected with the people, that it’s time we take our government – it’s our government, it’s not theirs. We need to take it away from them.

HUCKABEE: What about Chuck Woolery for Congress? Is that in your future?

WOOLERY: Well, you know, it’s funny. When I was in high school, I remember a neighbor friend of ours, Mrs. Shotland who was from New York who moved to Kentucky, and she said to me, "You should be in politics." And I said, "I don’t think I’d do very well because I tell the truth." And that’s the problem. And think that there’s so, everything is so politically correct these days, and people are just tiptoeing around the edges and tiptoeing through the tulips that you can’t say anything or mean anything without offending everyone. Consequently, nothing ever gets said and never gets done.

HUCKABEE: Chuck, I want to ask you-

WOOLERY: Can I say one other thing?

HUCKABEE: Yeah, please do.

WOOLERY: And I would really like to have your opinion on this because I thought about this the last day, it came to my mind. It seems to me like, and correct me if I’m wrong, the closer you are to the Constitution, the farther right you are considered to be.

HUCKABEE: Interesting.

WOOLERY: The farther away you are from the Constitution, the farther left you appear to be. Would you that, would you agree with that? Am I wrong?

(AUDIENCE APPLAUSE)

HUCKABEE: You know, I would, but, obviously, the liberals say that’s nonsense, but-

WOOLERY: My whole point is, why isn’t the Constitution in the middle and people are either moving either toward it or away from it, whatever? But it’s either right or its left. It’s not in the middle where it should be.

HUCKABEE: That’s a very astute observation. I’ve never heard anyone say it, and that’s why I’m going to be the first to sign up and contribute to the Chuck Woolery for Congress fund. I’m going to be on your team. Chuck, great to have you here. Gotta come back sometime because I want to hear some old stories of the Love Connection and a whole lot of things. Chuck’s probably got more stories than we could ever get to. What a great guy. Give a big hand to Chuck Woolery, everybody.

Kate Winslet: Belle of the Bambi Awards

November 26, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Getting all prettied up for an evening on the town, Kate Winslet turned up at the 2009 Bambi Awards in Potsdam, Germany on Thursday (November 26).

Charming fellow attendees, the Oscar winning actress mingled with guests outside of the Metropolis hall before heading inside to perform her ceremony duties for the day.

And while she’s always in high demand when it comes to films, Miss Winslet certainly seems to have a fond place in the heart of “Titanic” director James Cameron.

He told Playboy magazine: “I’d certainly work with Kate Winslet again; she’s very talented. Whereas Leo DiCaprio switches his acting on and off like a faucet, Kate’s acting process is to internalize all this stuff and use it.”

Shakira: Bambi Awards Beauty

November 26, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Spending the day out on the red carpet, Shakira looked gorgeous as she arrived for the 2009 Bambi Awards in Potsdam, Germany on Thursday (November 26).

Held at the Metropolis hall at Filmpark Babelsberg, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer strutted through the reception area at the annual event by Hubert Burda Media to recognize excellence in international media and television.

And with her new album “She Wolf” just recently having been released, Shakira recently dished on teaming with director Sophie Muller for her new “Did It Again” video.

“It was a collaboration between this friend of mine who’s a dancer, and me. She showed me this contemporary dance piece that was produced in Iceland. So we said, ‘Hey, maybe we could do something like this for Did It Again,’” Shakira said. “So we brought this choreographer from Iceland from this contemporary dance company, and we worked on this piece.”

The 32-year-old Colombian cutie added, “And I decided to bring a little bit of this painter, [Lawrence] Alma-Tadema, who portrays women in these bathrooms, these Turkish bathrooms, and I wanted to bring a little bit of that poetic imagery to this video. And I remember not too long ago having watched a few women turn their heads in a trans in Morocco. So we brought all these pieces — Moroccan women twirling and turning their heads, and the poetry from Alma-Tadema’s paintings, plus this Icelandic contemporary dance piece — and we mixed all these pieces together for the video.”

Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming

November 16, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Movies

505517.jpg

The sequel to Stomp the Yard has begun shooting in Atlanta! Since I don’t think I’ve ever seen the first Stomp the Yard, I’m going to assume it’s the tragic story of an ill-fated cement technician who is killed while paving a new schoolyard, thereby prompting the local dance team to “stomp” that beloved yard and win the fancy cheerleading trophy.

And get a load of these funky names! “Collins Pennie … Pooch Hall, Terrence J, Lil Duval, Tika Sumpter, Kiely Alexis Williams, Keith David, rapper David Banner and music artist Teyena Taylor join “So You Think You Can Dance” runner-up Stephen “tWitch” Boss in the cast.” (I love that the rapper has the plainest moniker.) Rob Hardy will direct (he probably is at this very moment, actually) from a script by the guy who penned Feel the Noise. Hey, writing feature-length rock videos is a specific skill.

The title for the upcoming sequel is (spoiler alert) Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming. And yes, I think they’re shooting for a theatrical release on this one.(Source)

Ex-Presidents Bush, Clinton to share Chicago stage

November 15, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Their reported Radio City Music Hall showdown in New York may be off, but former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are scheduled for a joint appearance to talk biotechnology next May in the more low-key environs of the Second City.

The Biotechnology Industry Organization’s annual meeting May 3-6 in ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews will serve as backdrop for the two former leaders in what the group says will have them “appear together as co-keynote speakers at the 2010 BIO International Convention,” the group confirmed.

The two former presidents will share a McCormick Place stage May 4, taking questions submitted by BIO President Jim Greenwood after opening remarks by the former Democratic and Republican presidents.

BIO’s announcement, expected as early as Monday morning in Washington, comes about a week after the 42nd and 43rd leaders of the free world abruptly pulled out of a scheduled joint appearance for February at Radio City Music Hall. The two canceled the event because of a “violation of contract and a promoter who insisted on billing it as something it wasn’t,” a Clinton spokesman said at the time.

The New York appearance had been “overhyped … as a death-match faceoff between the men,” the New York Post said earlier this month.

Though no tussle is expected, BIO is promising a “lively dialogue,”  expected to draw an international community of more than 15,000 biotech industry leaders.

Last month, BIO announced that former Vice President Al Gore, Clinton’s No. 2 and Bush’s rival in the 2000 election, will give a keynote speech on  May 5 with a focus on the environment and health care reform.

“The participation of Presidents Bush and Clinton, as well as Vice President Gore, underscore the growing importance of biotechnology to address some of the world’s most pressing issues,” said Abbott Laboratories Chief Executive Miles White, who is co-chairman of the BIO 2010 Steering Committee along with Baxter International Inc. CEO Bob Parkinson.

Both Chicago-area companies have a huge stake in biotechnology, with their top-selling drugs derived from genetic engineering of human cells. Deerfield-based Baxter sells the blockbuster blood-clotting drug Advate and is developing stem cell therapies to regenerate the heart. North Chicago-based Abbott markets the biotech drug Humira, which is used for a range of autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease.

“The decision of Presidents Bush and Clinton to participate in BIO 2010 reflects what we in the Midwest biotech community feel so strongly, which is that biotechnology holds great promise for health care, agriculture and industrial applications,” said Parkinson. “Important, bipartisan, public dialogue such as this needs to take place to advance knowledge about that promise, and about the successes already achieved.”

Drug and biotech firms play a key role in sponsoring BIO and generally underwrite the costs to bring in speakers. Gore’s keynote address is sponsored by California-based biotech giant Amgen Inc.

BIO said Johnson & Johnson is the sponsor for the keynotes of Clinton and Bush. Fees paid to Gore, Clinton and Bush are not disclosed.

“I’m sure this keynote discussion will inspire and engage the global industry leaders in attendance,” said BIO president Greenwood.

Daley: We’ve cleaned up city hiring

November 14, 2009 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

The Tribune’s Clout Street blog reports: Mayor Richard Daley said today that his administration has taken sufficient steps to reform its hiring to end federal court oversight of its personnel practices.

City Hall’s top lawyer told aldermen this week that she planned to tell a federal judge the city is now in “substantial compliance” with the decades-old Shakman decree, the legal threshold for ending court control.

Speaking today after the city’s annual Landscape Awards ceremony at the Garfield Park Conservatory, the mayor said his administration has done enough to overhaul the hiring process to warrant stopping the federal involvement.
