Victims of Cicero fire memorialized

February 20, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Allison Gist slowly made her way out of the church where a service was held Saturday for her three children and two grandchildren, all killed in a Cicero fire a week earlier.

Every few feet, she was stopped by well-wishers offering hugs, condolences and envelopes.

“I didn’t know everyone cared like that,” said Gist before getting into a long white limousine headed toward the traditional post-funeral meal. “You never know how much everyone cares until something like that.”

The fire killed seven people. At the Second Baptist Church of LaGrange on Saturday, large pictures of five of the victims stood in front of the pulpit: siblings Sallie Gist, 19, and twins Elijah and Elisha Gist, 16; and Sallie’s two children, Rashon Gist Reed, 3, and Brian Gist Reed, just 3 days old.

The fire started in the back porch of a home at 3034 S. 48th Ct. in Cicero last Sunday morning. Investigators have yet to determine a cause.

Elijah Grays, the father of Sallie, Elijah and Elisha Gist, got to Saturday’s service about 45 minutes early and smoked a cigarette outside.

“I’m trying to hold up,” he said. “It’s a hard situation.”

The Gists were well-known in LaGrange’s tightly-knit African-American community, where they lived for many years. Soon, the small brick church with blue awnings brimmed with life.

Pews filled and extra chairs were hastily unfolded to line the aisles on the church’s main floor and in the balcony. People stood shoulder-to-shoulder in whatever space was left, and the crowd spilled down the church’s front steps to the front door.

Among those attending were several area ministers and U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.).

Sobs, occasional laughter, shouts of praise and a gospel-laden organ accompanied songs, poems and memories from friends and relatives of the five young people.

“We can’t do anything about the length of our life, but we can do something about the width and breadth of our life,” said Karen Brown, a teacher at Lyons Township High School, where Elisha Gist was a student. “While her life may have been short, it was wide and it was deep.”

The service lasted about two hours and afterward, family members seemed buoyed by the outpouring of love and concern.

“It helped us very much to have so much support of the neighborhood, the community, the schools,” Grays said. “It doesn’t take the pain away quickly, but it makes me feel better.”

Amy Smith was among several young people who wore T-shirts emblazoned with the victim’s names, pictures and phrases like “Gone But Never Forgotten.” The service had crystallized memories of so many hours spent with Sallie, Elijah and Elisha.

“Just the things we used to do, hang out, watch movies,” said Smith, 23, her eyes red. “This is a tragedy that shouldn’t have ever happened.

Also killed in the fire were Byron Reed, 20, Sallie Gist’s boyfriend and the father of Rashon and Brian, and Tiera Davidson, 18, a family friend.

On Saturday afternoon, a service was held for Reed at Carter Funeral Chapels on the city’s South SideSouth Side reviewsSouth Side reviews. His children and Sallie Gist also were memorialized at the service.

Reed’s mother, Shilla Newton, said before the service that her family was comforted by their spiritual faith.

“Our family recognizes that when things like this happen, God has a purpose,” she said.

Man tries to rob suburban bank with fake bomb

February 09, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

A man entered a Wauconda bank today and tried to rob it with what he claimed was a bomb.

But the man walked away without taking any money, and no explosives were found. No one was injured, the FBI and Wauconda police said.

About 2:15 p.m. today the heavily disguised man entered the Wauconda Community Bank, 495 W. Liberty St., and placed a package on a counter.

The man then turned and walked away, according to the FBI and Wauconda police.

A note on the package claimed that a bomb was inside and instructed employees to place an unspecified amount of cash at a nearby location or the bomb would be detonated, but the robbery attempt was unsuccessful as no money was removed from the bank, authorities said.

 The bank and surrounding area were evacuated for about 4 hours, but no explosives were found inside the package by members of the Waukegan Fire Department Bomb Squad, and no injuries were reported.

The Wauconda Police Department is working with the FBI to continue the investigation. During the evacuation members from 11 neighboring police departments responded.

No further description of the robber was available.

Brothers charged with bank robbery

February 05, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Two Waukegan brothers suspected of robbing a Gurnee credit union last week and a Long Grove bank in October were arrested today and charged with bank robbery, attempted bank robbery and attempted murder of a police officer, officials said.

Rashe Watkins, 33, and Julius Watkins, 29, were arrested without incident outside of the Waukegan Park District Field House Sports and Fitness Center, 800 N. Baldwin Ave., at about 11:20 a.m., Gurnee Police Cmdr. Jay Patrick said.

Last week’s robbery occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 29 at the Community Trust Credit UnionThe Union reviewsThe Union reviews, 1313 North Skokie Highway in Gurnee, Patrick said. During that robbery, one of the suspects held credit union employees at gunpoint as they were leaving for the day and escorted them back into the building, Patrick said.

The suspect could not get any cash from the credit union vault, but took a small amount of personal cash from a teller and then bound the hands of the employees with plastic zip ties, Patrick said. A Gurnee police officer responded to an alarm call at the credit union, which prompted the suspect to exit out of the rear of the building, he said.

Another responding police officer began to chase the suspect on foot and the suspect subsequently fired several shots at him from a handgun, he said. The shots hit a nearby building and the officer was not injured, Patrick said.

The suspect escaped the area and was allegedly picked up by his brother in a waiting vehicle, Patrick said.

On Oct. 10, 2009, the brothers allegedly committed a similar armed robbery at the National City Bank, 3980 Route 22 in Long Grove, when they ambushed two employees as they prepared to open the bank for the day, according to a news release from the FBI. During that robbery, both bank employees were also bound with plastic zip ties, the FBI said.

Although not charged, the Watkins brothers are suspects in an April 2009 take-over robbery of the Great Lakes Credit Union, 1509 Milwaukee Avenue in Libertyville, the release states.

Bail has been set at $2 million each for the charge of attempted murder of a police officer, Patrick said.

The brothers will be transported to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews on Saturday morning by special agents of the FBI, where they will be appear in federal court in Chicago on Monday on charges of the attempted robbery of the Community Trust Credit Union as well as the National City Bank robbery in Long Grove, he said.

NIU professor talks about Guantanamo despite protests

February 04, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Vowing that he would not let protesters or threats stop him from talking about the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, attorney Marc Falkoff told an audience at McHenry Community College Thursday night that many of the detainees were innocent men imprisoned without evidence.

Falkoff added that there are some genuine terrorists at the prison, but it also houses “scores of men who are entirely innocent.”

The controversial Northern Illinois University law professor was forced to defend himself against some heated questions about his free legal work on behalf of the detainees and his publication of a book of poetry by 17 of them.  “Poems From Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak” was published in 2007.

“What have you done for our military people who have been fighting?” asked Mary Alger of Crystal LakeThe Crystal Lake reviewsThe Crystal Lake reviews.

Falkoff said he donates to the Disabled Veterans of America and defended the poetry book, saying it was important that Americans know the detainees are human beings.

Her husband, Joe Alger, a member of the Patriot Guard, a motorcycle group that volunteers as escorts at the funerals of service members killed in action, would have none of Falkoff’s explanations.

“Every family who has had someone killed in action that I’ve talked to feels this is an affront to them,” said Alger, a military veteran.

Alger and his group held posters and American flags in a demonstration outside the center before Falkoff’s talk, but college security officers made them put the materials away before they could enter the building.

An extra security detail of Crystal Lake police officers stood by and escorted one woman from the auditorium after she continued to interrupt Falkoff while he tried to answer her questions.

In response to a question from Joe Alger, Falkoff said he would continue to speak out about the legal issues at Guantanamo, where 172 prisoners remain. The prison at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba once held 779 detainees.

“I am not going to  bow to a mob that is trying to keep me from talking about important issues,” said Falkoff.  The retort brought applause from the audience of about 150.

Sean McCormick, a 20-year-old student who attended the talk as an assignment for a sociology class, said it was an enlightening experience.

“I wasn’t educated about (Guantanamo) and I learned a lot about it tonight,” said McCormick. “I think the protesters had some good points, but I thought they were disrespectful.”

At a reception after the talk, Falkoff, flanked by police officers, said he has received numerous threats against him and his family.

“My wife is out of her mind that someone is going to throw something at me or shoot me,” said Falkoff.

His appearance was sponsored by the Student Peace Action Network, McHenry County Pax Christi and the McHenry County Peace Coalition.

Quinn, Hynes in testy radio debate

January 28, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

The two Democratic governor candidates today met face-to-face for the final time before Tuesday’s election, with Comptroller Dan Hynes coming under fire from both Gov. Pat Quinn and a radio host over a controversial TV ad featuring the late Mayor Harold Washington.

Appearing on the “Cliff Kelley Show” on WVON 1690-AM, the governor again accused Hynes of using decades-old footage of Washington, ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews’s first African-American mayor, criticizing Quinn to turn black voters against him.

The radio show host seized on that idea when he asked Hynes the purpose of the ad, in which Washington says in 1987 that he fired Quinn as City Hall revenue director because Quinn was more concerned with public relations than effective management.

“Was the intent to try to divide the black community or to draw votes from people who are racist and didn’t want Washington in office in the first place?” said Kelley, who frequently sided with Quinn.

Hynes countered that he ran the ad to “explain to people that the governor’s inability to solve problems and his lack of competence is not just a one-time situation.”

Quinn used the live radio show to again question Hynes’ involvement with his father’s 1987 mayoral bid against Washington. Tom Hynes, 19th Ward power broker, made his third-party bid at a time of great racial tension in Chicago politics.

“I’d rather lose the race for governor than divide the people of Illinois along race,” Quinn said. “That’s what my opponent is doing.”

Quinn also repeatedly ticked off the names of prominent black elected officials who have endorsed him to demonstrate his support in the African-American community, a key source of Democratic votes.

At times, Hynes appeared frustrated at the amount of time Quinn was given to respond to questions, at one point asking Kelley off-air if he could respond to a “10-minute monologue” Quinn gave on job creation. Kelley answered no, though Hynes later cut in.

Afterward, Quinn declared the exchange the “most substantive” discussion of issues yet. Asked if it was because he got more favorable air time, Quinn laughed before state Sen. Donne Trotter, D-Chicago, interjected.

“Well, he’s home here,” Trotter said. “No doubt about it.”
