Monthly soul dance party Windy City Soul Club stomped us into February properly with a dazzling set from Danny’s soul night regular and the city’s authority on Midwest funk, Dante Carfanga. Carfanga unleashed floor-filling gems from his hard-won collection but kept close to the WCSC’s preference for Northern Soul’s faster tunes and joyous vocals. Dancers got a chance to hear rarely played soul vinyl and the mood overall was frisky and upbeat—not too mention favorably gender balanced for a social outing in Chicago.

Mardi Gras with Jesse Jane at enclave: Photo gallery

Nothing warms the winter-weary limbs like a night out partying New Orleans style with a major league porn star—or so I am told. This weekend, Chicago nightlife favorite Jesse Jane popped up at enclave for a Mardi Gras-themed shindig from promoters Global Adrenaline. Unlike many celebs that breeze through town, Jane didn’t seem to have a problem mingling with her partying minions —as the photos above tend to attest. It’s entirely possible that the oversexed dancefloor voodoo had something to do with the Saints win on Sunday—but not probable.

Local food execs sign on to Michelle Obama anti-obesity campaign

February 09, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

WASHINGTON–”Let’s Move,” a campaign against childhood obesity led by first lady Michelle Obama, is scheduled to debut today.

The program includes a pledge from 40 executives of major food producers and agribusinesses, some from the ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews area, to help promote healthy eating.

Among the signers: Irene Rosenfeld, the CEO of Kraft Foods, based in Northfield, and Brenda C. Barnes, the CEO of the Sara Lee Corp., based in Downers Grove.
“Too many of our children are seriously overweight, and our companies
stand ready to work with you to address this health crisis,” they wrote
in an open letter to the first lady.
In recent years, the executives noted, they “have changed the way we
develop and market more than 10,000 products, reducing fat, trans fat,
sugar, salt and calories without sacrificing the convenience and taste
consumers demand.”

The first lady is to launch her signature initiative at mid-day with
six Cabinet secretaries, providing they aren’t kept away as the capital
digs out of a blizzard and prepares for more  snow.

Other special guests expected: Tiki Barber, an NBC correspondent and
former NFL player; Judith Palfrey, president of the American Academy of
Pediatrics; and Milwaukee’s Will Allen, who is leading an effort to
bring fresh produce to inner cities, Obama’s aides said.

This morning in the Oval Office, President Barack Obama signed a
memorandum on childhood obesity. He said it would trigger a 90-day plan
that “provides optimal coordination” among federal agencies to fight
the epidemic.

”We think this has enormous promise,” he said of the first lady’s bid to promote healthy eating habits and exercise.

Mrs. Obama stood behind her husband with an arm draped over his chair
as he penned his signature, then patted him on the back and said “Good
job” when he was finished.

Cabinet members Arne Duncan, Kathleen Sebelius, Tom Vilsack and Ken Salazar were also on hand.
