A Bowen High School sophomore was killed and another student wounded in a shooting Wednesday afternoon in the South Chicago neighborhood on the South Side, officials said.

The victims, both males, 16 and 18, were taken to hospitals in serious to critical condition, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis.

The 16-year-old, Deantonio Goss of the 8400 block of South Colfax Avenue, was eventually pronounced dead at 3:52 p.m. at Stroger Hospital, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The 18-year-old was being treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Both victims attended Bowen, which is a few blocks from the site of the shooting, said Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Monique Bond.

The shooting happened in the 8600 block of South Saginaw Avenue, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The 16-year-old was a sophomore and the 18-year-old is a senior, Bond said.

Chicago police said they arrested two women early this morning after receiving a report that seven children had been left home alone.

According to preliminary reports, someone called the Department of Children and Family Services about 11 p.m. and told them several children were at home alone and making noise, said Police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

A movie extra from Chicago who was working on a scene of “Transformers 3″ being shot in Hammond, Ind. was seriously injured Wednesday night during a stunt when a flying object crashed through the windshield of her car and hit her, according to the Indiana State Police.

Laverick Marshall, of the 6400 block of South King Drive, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

About 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a call of a large crowd fighting near 64th Street and South King Drive, said Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

When the crowd was cleared, Marshall was found shot in the back nearby, she said. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

About 15 minutes later in the South Chicago neighborhood, an 18-year-old man was shot in his thigh on the 7900 block of South Essex Avenue, Greer said.

The driver of a van was shot in the face and killed in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side early this morning. The van struck a tree and flipped over but the five other people inside were not injured, police said.

The man killed was identified this morning as Linton Goldsmith, 33, of the 2400 block of East 86th Street, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Shortly after the shooting at 1 a.m., Goldsmith was found unresponsive in the 8000 block of South Jeffery Avenue, said Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

A 50-year-old woman in a wheelchair was taken in critical condition to a hospital

this afternoon after falling onto CTA Blue Line tracks, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The woman was at the Cicero Avenue stop about 1:05 p.m. when she fell from the

platform and landed on the tracks, said Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis.

Shirley Sherrod has reconciled with the NAACP, the civil rights group who was quick to condemn her after a video was altered to make her appear racist.

The NAACP had initially released a statement supporting her removal from the Agriculture Department within the first day or so after blogger Andrew Breitbart posted the video. But the next day, the organization retracted its statement, and NAACP president Ben Jealous issued an apology, saying the group had been “snookered.”

Jury foreman James Matsumoto, of Chicago, said the panel was close to convicting the former governor on other counts — hung up 11-1 in some instances. But some jurors said the panel was not close to acquitting him on any counts. They actually had agreed to convict him of a second count last week — a count of attempted extortion — but one juror backed away from that choice at the last moment, the foreman said.

The counts on which the jury could not agree framed the heart of the government claims that Blagojevich schemed to profit from his post from his earliest days in office and in the 2008 attempted to auction off the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama. A lone holdout, a female retiree from the suburbs, blocked conviction of Blagojevich on the Senate seat allegation, another juror said.

U.S. District Judge James Zagel declared a mistrial on the 23 disputed counts, including sweeping racketeering and conspiracy counts that accused him of running the state as a criminal enterprise.

Still, the lone conviction makes Democrat Blagojevich the second former Illinois governor in four years to be convicted in federal court of wrongdoing and the fourth since 1973.

The jury also was unable to come to any unanimous decision on four counts faced by Blagojevich’s brother, Robert, who ran the governor’s campaign fund for four months in 2008.

Rod Blagojevich immediately portrayed himself as a victim as he lashed out at prosecutors, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald in particular.

“I didn’t break any laws, I didn’t do anything wrong,” Blagojevich said. “This particular prosecutor did everything he could to target me and prosecute me, persecute me, put pressure on my family, try to take our home, take me from my kids, arrest me.”

Without hesitation, prosecutors declared their intention to retry him. Assistant U.S. Attorney Reid Schar told Zagel they could “be here tomorrow” to set a date.

Rather than lie low in the face of having to try the case again, Blagojevich’s lawyers heaped scorn on Fitzgerald as well.

“This guy Fitzgerald is a master at indicting people for noncriminal behavior,” Sam Adam Sr. roared as he left the courthouse. “This guy is nuts.”

A 17-year-old boy on his way to school was shot in the leg as he walked to Gage Park High School this morning, authorities said.

At least one person was being questioned, police said.

Police and school officials said initial information that the shooting may have happened during a large fight was incorrect, and was based on information from 911 calls.

The teen was taken in fair to serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis. The teen’s injuries appeared not to be life-threatening, Curtis

Shocking claims from a Malawian man has left his community and medical authorities stunned, he says he has developed FEMALE genitalia and even MENSTRUATES.

“Two years ago I developed strange human flesh on my anus and my wife confirmed to me that they were female genitals but they disappeared,” 25-year-old Jali Mateyu told Malawi’s The Nation. “But in June this year they reappeared just between the anus and the genitals. My member shrunk and later disappeared. There were only female genitals.”

He added that the female genitals itch, secrete fluid when scratched and even flow blood. “My wife confirmed that they are close to women’s menses,” Jali says.

Distraught, he turned to a local herbalist who cut off the female flesh and applied herbs. “Now male genitals have resurfaced but they are too weak; I can’t perform in bed,” he says.

Since developing the condition, he hasn’t been able to do manual work or run his grocery–which has been closed.
