Mayor Richard Daley says he will not run for re-election in 2011, saying it’s “time for me, it’s time for Chicago to move on.”

“The truth is I have been thinking about this for the past several months,” Daley said at a City Hall news conference that stunned the city. “In the end this is a personal decision, no more, no less.”

His wife Maggie stood by his side with the help of a crutch, smiling broadly as the mayor continued: “I have always known that people want you to work hard for them. Clearly, they won’t always agree with you. Obviously, they don’t like it when you make a mistake. But at all times, they expect you to lead, to make difficult decisions, rooted in what’s right for them.

“For 21 years, that’s what I’ve tried to do,” he said. “But today, I am announcing that I will not seek a 7th term as mayor of the city of Chicago.

“Simply put, it’s time,” said Daley, 68. “Time for me, it’s time for Chicago to move on.”

Several people, including two children, were rescued this morning from a blaze in a sparsely occupied Bronzeville condo building where conditions were described as “pretty bad” by a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

A 56-year-old man is accused of stabbing his roommate over an $80-telephone bill at their West Side residence, prosecutors said today.

Lester Scott was charged with felony aggravated domestic battery in connection with the stabbing that occurred Friday at the residence in the 4400 block of West Madison Street in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

A movie extra from Chicago who was working on a scene of “Transformers 3″ being shot in Hammond, Ind. was seriously injured Wednesday night during a stunt when a flying object crashed through the windshield of her car and hit her, according to the Indiana State Police.

Laverick Marshall, of the 6400 block of South King Drive, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

About 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a call of a large crowd fighting near 64th Street and South King Drive, said Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

When the crowd was cleared, Marshall was found shot in the back nearby, she said. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

About 15 minutes later in the South Chicago neighborhood, an 18-year-old man was shot in his thigh on the 7900 block of South Essex Avenue, Greer said.

The driver of a van was shot in the face and killed in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side early this morning. The van struck a tree and flipped over but the five other people inside were not injured, police said.

The man killed was identified this morning as Linton Goldsmith, 33, of the 2400 block of East 86th Street, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Shortly after the shooting at 1 a.m., Goldsmith was found unresponsive in the 8000 block of South Jeffery Avenue, said Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.
