Fire Fighters Pay Homage In Oak Lawn

An oversize American flag hanging from an extended fire ladder could be seen from blocks away from the Blake Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn, where hundreds of Chicago firefighters were lined up Monday to pay their respects to fallen comrade Edward Stringer.

Although some who waited in line to enter the funeral home, like Lt. Sebastian Straughter from Engine 103 in the West Loop neighborhood, spoke of the poor condition of the abandoned building where Stringer and fellow firefighter Corey Ankum died Wednesday, others were still in a state of shock over what they called an unavoidable accident.

“If laying blame could cause this not to happen in the future, then it would be a different story. But it’s going to happen … there’s nothing that we could have done differently,” said fire engineer Steve Serb as he was getting into his car across the street from the visitation. “That’s one of the sad things. Nancee Rapoport called her nephew Anthony Rapoport “son.” He called her “mom.” They lived together in a modest house with Anthony’s grandparents in Wilmette.

But it was not a peaceful household. Police said they were called there numerous times — including once on Christmas Eve and again on Christmas Day to mediate arguments between nephew and aunt.

When police were called back again about 4 p.m. Saturday, they found Nancee Rapoport, 49, unconscious on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood. She suffered a fractured skull and brain injuries and died Sunday in Evanston Hospital.

Authorities say Anthony Rapoport, 24, admitted to beating her with an aluminum baseball bat, telling police he was “tired of being nagged.” He was charged with murder and was being held Monday on $8 million bail.

Nancee Rapoport’s estranged husband, Ken, said she treated Anthony Rapoport like a son.
