More than 60 reputed members or associates of the Black Souls, a West Side street gang, were arrested since a homicide in late August as part of a new strategy by Chicago police to try to reduce gang murders and violence.
The crackdown, first reported by the Tribune in Tuesday’s newspaper, came after law enforcement warned several West Side gangs in a controversial meeting in August of a widespread police reaction against any gang whose member committed a murder.
Following the gang-related Aug. 31 slaying of Anthony Carter, 18, police began to focus their efforts against the Black Souls, arresting more than 60 people on mostly drug-related matters.
