Man arrested in 3-alarm church fire in Edgebrook neighborhood

January 31, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

edgebrookchurchfire2.jpgPolice have arrested a man in connection with an extra-alarm fire that broke out tonight at the Edgebrook Lutheran Church on the Northwest Side.

The man was taken into custody near the scene of the fire by the Police Bomb and Arson Section, said Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. The man reportedly started the fire in the church rectory, Langford said.

Fire officials were called to the scene at 9:35 p.m. at the church at 6436 N. Hiawatha Ave., said Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis.

The 2 1/2-story brick church was “fully involved” with smoke and fire shooting out the rear of the structure, Curtis said.

There were no injuries reported as of 10:30 p.m. Traffic is blocked off from Devon and Central avenues to east of Nokomis Avenue.

As of 11 p.m., the fire was still in progress with a large volume of flames pouring from the building, Curtis said.
Rebecca Hennessey, who lives nearby, heard a bunch of sirens from her home and went over to the church immediately to check out all the commotion.

She and other family members have been parishioners at the church for up to 15 years. She said her three daughters stood up at a wedding shortly after last Thanksgiving.

She described herself as an avid church-goer, adding that she went to the church earlier today for a going-away party for one of its pastors.

A 16-year resident of the Northwest Side’s Edgebrook neighborhood, she described the fire as “devastating.”

Pentagram at Empty Bottle: Photo gallery

Founded during the days of acid rock, its simply noteworthy that Pentagram even exits in this decade. Especially since the band has never had a major label backing its music—legend has it that members of KISS tried to persuade the big boys to sign the Virginia band years ago, but the deal never was done. Instead, the rock quartet has been characterized by instability and line-up changes, sporadic activity and fertile periods of recording and regional touring but also recent renewed appreciation and respect—especially for its early recordings. Recent tours have brought it as far as Eastern Europe—where its legend is well-known. Many consider it the doom metal forefather—and the rest of us can count it along with Blue Cheer as a key group in the story of American metal’s pre-history. Saturday night, the band took to the Empty Bottle stage for a fearsome set. Yours truly was unable to attend, so please refrain from telling me how awesome the aural carnage was.

Illinois Primary: Who wants to be a Comptroller?

January 31, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Who is the Illinois Comptroller? In a nutshell, the keeper of the state’s check books. The comptroller maintains the state’s accounts, orders payments into and out of the treasury’s funds and signs paychecks. Another aspect of the job is the maintenance of cemetery regulation and protections of its care funds.

This is in contrast to the duties of the Treasurer who is essentially the CIO of state funds. Responsible for the safekeeping of state monies and their disbursement as ordered by the comptroller.

Here’s the 411:
• Dan Hynes is leaving his position as Comptroller to run for Governor.
• Almost all of the candidates are pushing for an expansion of duties within the Comptroller position.

Republican candidates:

Judy Baar Topinka
Judy Topinka served three consecutive terms as state treasurer then lost in the race for governor against Blagojevich in 2006. Part of her platform involves a push for combining the positions of comptroller and treasurer to save what she presumes to be $20 million yearly. The idea isn’t completely out there — New York only has a comptroller and no treasurer — but it would involve a legislative amendment. She is the Republican candidate endorsed by the Tribune.

www.judybaartopinka.com/

Jim Dodge
As a member of Metra’s Board of Directors, Jim Dodge was a major force behind an overhaul of Metra’s Web site, making it more readily accessible and user-friendly. However, he is involved in a smear campaign against Bill Kelly, also a Republican running for Comptroller. Dodge hired Joe Novak, who has been nicknamed “Low Blow Joe” and has worked on the campaigns of Walter Mondale and Mayor Daley in the past.

William J. Kelly
William “Bill” Kelly is a cable TV host (video above) who was the target of a smear campaign by fellow Republican candidate Jim Dodge. He has petitioned to Pat Quinn to do something about it.

Democtratic candidates::

David E. Miller
David E. Miller has been a State Representative of the 29th District since 2001 and remains dedicated to twenty years as a dentist in Dalton, Illinois.

http://www.davidmillerillinois.com/

S. Raja Krishnamoorthi
Raja Krishnamoorthi is currently endorsed by both the Tribune and the Sun-Times. He is a longtime friend of President Obama and he’s also a former Illinois deputy state treasurer. He is most concerned about the issue of more regulation within the funeral home and cemetery industries, particularly after last year’s incident in Burr Oak Cemetery where four people were charged for digging up between 200 – 300 bodies to resell the plots.

Clinton “Clint” Krislov
Clinton “Clint” Krislov has been a public interest and consumer protection lawyer for over 25 years and previously ran for a Senate seat as well as Attorney General.

Oprah’s present to herself: Springer spaniel pups

January 31, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Oprah Winfrey gave herself a birthday present Friday when she adopted two springer spaniel puppies from a ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews shelter, according to her Web site and shelter officials.

In keeping with the background of their high profile new owner, the puppies, 14-week-old sisters Sunny and Lauren, already made their first television appearance, on the Oprah Winfrey Show on Friday evening. A littermate of the pups, Trent, which was going to a friend of a friend of Oprah’s, also appeared.

Winfrey contacted shelter officials about six months ago asking them to be on the lookout for springer spaniel pups, said Paula Fasseas, founder and chair of PAWS, a Chicago-based no-kill shelter at 1997 N. Clybourn Avenue.

She said that while she is just happy that the dogs were saved, she is particularly excited with them going to Oprah because of her ability to put focus on saving shelter animals.

“What’s really wonderful about Oprah adopting is that she educates the world and the message is to go to a shelter,” said Fasseas. “She’s really directed so much attention to this terrible problem we have with homeless pets.”

Fasseas said Winfrey has been a generous donor to the shelter and has previously adopted a cocker spaniel from there. Previously she featured dogs and the shelter in her magazine.

Fasseas said shelter officials search the city pound in an effort to save animals from being euthanized and to find them homes. She said the siblings were part of a litter turned over to the pound by an owner. Because they were turned over by the owner, the shelter could have euthanized them immediately, she said.

She said she did not know the circumstances behind the owner’s turning them in but said often animals are brought to the pound by people who may have lost their homes or just don’t have the means to care for the animals.

Fasseas said she had only told shelter workers to keep an eye out for a springer spaniel. She kept Oprah’s identity secret and only told them that a “donor” was interested.

When the dogs were located, a picture was sent to Winfrey’s assistants and Fasseas was surprised to hear Oprah’s voice on her telephone.

“I like those, I want to see those spaniels,” Fasseas recalled Oprah saying.

After seeing the dogs in person, she decided to adopt them, Fasseas said.

Fasseas said the dogs were being kept with a foster family to ensure that they were healthy until the adoption could be finalized. She said the dogs will stay in the foster home until they are old enough to join Oprah’s other dogs. A previous dog of Oprah’s had died of a highly contagious disease.

By coincidence, the adoptions of the black-and-white pups came the same day that Winfrey turned 56, according to her site.

“I did decide, though, to get myself a little birthday gift this year. Actually, I thought I’d get myself two,” she says on her site. ”They just arrived in time for my birthday.”

Ninth annual Lakeview Polar Bear Club’s polar plunge

January 31, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

This SlideShowPro photo gallery requires the Flash Player plugin and a web browser with JavaScript enabled.

You have to hand it to Chicagoans: Braving the icy waters of Lake Michigan in the near nude is no easy feat. But at Saturday’s ninth annual Lakeview Polar Bear Club’s polar plunge, group morale and positive attitudes won out over oppressive winter conditions for the sake of a great cause. Hundreds of participants from all over the area took the dive into the lake in 33 degree weather (colder with the wind chill) to support two needy local families. The nonprofit club donates 100 percent of all funds raised to helping these families out. From daring middle-aged men betting on how long they could last in the water to young couples huddling together for warmth, the event attracted every kind of character. When the clock struck noon, cheering commenced, and eager beavers raced to the lake while others followed. Triumphant yells could be heard from the water as participants jumped in. After all finally surfaced from their plunge (and the numbness began to set in), one thing was clear: this was a tough bunch.

A tanker truck spilled asphalt onto the Bishop Ford Freeway when it overturned on the roadway this afternoon, causing massive traffic delays in both directions.

No injuries were reported in the crash, which happened about 12:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the Bishop Ford (Interstate Highway 94) near 130th Street, according to Illinois State Police.

One southbound lane at 115th Street has since been reopened to traffic, said the Illinois Department of Transportation. Traffic in northbound lanes was also reopened at 130th after they were temporarily closed because of smoky vapors coming from the spilt asphalt.

“It is an inhalation danger,” said Larry Langford, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department, which sent a hazardous materials team to the scene. Langford said the vapors were blowing to the east of the southbound lanes, over the northbound side of the freeway.

He added that the frontage roads along either side of the freeway were also closed around the crash site.

No one was evacuated from the area, either from cars on the expressway or from buildings off the expressway, Langford said. Traffic was also diverted off the Bishop Ford whle the roadway was closed.

Residents to get email alerts from Chicago police

January 31, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Beginning today, ChicagoChicago reviewsChicago reviews police will be able to update the public instantly about everything from child abductions to traffic jams via a cell phone text or an email.

Chicago police have signed up for Nixle, a free alert notification system that sends messages to registered users. Supt. Jody Weis today compared Nixle to another social networking service — Twitter — where users “tweet” back and forth in 140 characters or less. He added that Nixle is secure and anyone who receives a message would know it’s coming from Chicago police.

Nixle is the latest Web service Chicago police have used this year to better inform the public. This summer, police launched a Facebook page and a blog, called Blog 501.

“We’re just trying to get as many ways out there that you can look at what’s going on at the police department,” Weis said.

About 6,000 people registered for Nixle at chicagopolice.org before the service went live, Cmdr. Jonathan Lewin said. The service is free, but standard text message rates apply. Users can receive messages about a particular area, such as their neighborhood, or citywide, Weis said.

Los Angeles, New York City and Dallas all use the service, Nixle CEO and founder Craig Mitnick said. Dallas gets as specific as sending out notices about shootings, Mitnick said.

“We have found that residents want to know if something is going on,” he said. “… They want to know more. They want it quickly.”

Brazen pet shop heist: Macaw stolen in Naperville

January 31, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

macawcombo.jpgOfficials from a Naperville pet store said they are concerned for the safety of a valuable exotic parrot which was allegedly stolen by a man who brazenly walked out of the west suburban shop with the bird hidden under his coat earlier this month.

The 7-month-old Severe Macaw was stolen from the store about 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 19, said Adam Stachowiak, co-owner of the Naperville Petland store, 720 S. Illinois Highway 59. He said the bird, a female named Sarah, is worth about $1,600.

Store officials noticed the bird was missing about a week after it was stolen while conducting monthly inventory, Stachowiak said. Officials filed a report with Naperville police Friday after they discovered that the bird had flown the coop.

He is concerned the bird could have been harmed from exposure to the cold when the man removed the parrot from his coat.

“It’s more of a concern to us that the bird is not being cared for correctly,” he said. “My hopes honestly are that the gentleman stole it and sold it right away to somebody who knows what they are doing.”

Police officials could not confirm that a police report had been filed, but store officials have been posting leaflets that the bird was missing and have posted a report on helpmefindmypet.com, a Web site that helps track missing animals.

The bird is described as green, with some blue and red feathers under its wings. Stachowiak said the bird had a band around one of its legs with an identification number, FX160. The medium-sized bird is about 10 to 12 inches from head to tail, he said.

The man that Stachowiak believes took the bird was caught on a surveillance video that seems to show him entering the store and making his way to an accessible aviary where the bird was resting on a branch with other birds, said Stachowiak.

The man is described as Caucasian, with a medium build and average height. He is balding with dark hair and is wearing a black jacket and hooded sweatshirt underneath, according to the video.

“He took one of the birds off the tree, slipped it into his coat and he was out the door about 30 seconds later,” said Stachowiak.

According to the video, the man entered the store about 6 p.m. and wandered through the store for about 30 minutes until he made it to the aviary, said Stachowiak. At one point after getting there, the man is seen talking with a young boy who was standing nearby and helped the child put another bird back on a branch, said Stachowiak.

He also is seen interacting briefly with several workers. He said workers do not recall the man because hundreds of people shop at the store daily.

Stachowiak said the aviary is left open so shoppers can interact with the birds. Leaving the aviary open allows the birds to get used to humans and makes them friendlier, he said. About 30 birds are on the tree, he said.

Stachowiak said he was concerned that the man was so brazen. He said that at the time of the theft, there were about 30 to 40 customers and about six staff members inside a 5,000-square-foot store that has only one entrance.

He said it’s the third time people have stolen animals from the Naperville store he has co-owned for about three years. Two puppies were stolen previously, he said, but none so boldly.

“It makes me nervous as a store owner that someone could be so bold with 10 to 15 people immediately around him,” said Stachowiak.

Illinois Primary Election: Enjoy the attack ads, but do your homework

January 31, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Oh Illinois politics, you are so predictably and consistently colorful with your rich and recent history of “alleged” corruption and the occasional “indictment.” Illinois is a dream beat for a political reporter—you just can’t make up stories as good as we get them unless you were in perhaps Philadelphia or maybe Moscow. It would be entertaining if it wasn’t so sad. So, to cut to the chase, there’s a primary election Tuesday February 2 in which we will be selecting tomorrow’s reformers and headline makers—but also a raft of not-so-glamorous but awfully powerful public servants—among them, judges.

Who is running? Are they golden, are they crooked, are they beholden to the interests of the Amish special interests? You’ve gotta research this stuff, people, because those attack ads, well, they can be a bit inaccurate.

Start with Illinois voting info.

Then hit these detailed maps of Congressional Districts and their current Representatives
for the Congressional re-elections.

The Board of Election of Commissioners for the city of Chicago takes care of all your voting needs from information about polling places to how to use the balloting system. The site also allows you to preview sample ballots and has a list of all Democratic, Republican and Green party candidates running for office.

Meet the judges. Get comprehensive information about the candidates running for any judicial positions in Cook County. The site lists endorsements for candidates and ratings of candidates from professional organizations, including the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Council of Lawyers and the Chicago Bar Association.

The Cook County Clerk lists nonpartisan information about the candidates, organized by political party. You can also view the full referenda and a schedule of public viewing.

Already have strong party ties? The Cook County Republicans will help you put a face to a name for candidates running in Cook County.  There’s also a link to view federal candidates.

For undecided democrats, the Cook County Democratic Party provides endorsements and voting recommendations for each office.

Chicago’s local ABC station invited candidates to submit information about themselves, including stances on issues. Though not all responded, many of the contenders for the major offices did.

Lupe Fiasco at The Shrine for Cheryle Jackson: Photo gallery

January 31, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

This SlideShowPro photo gallery requires the Flash Player plugin and a web browser with JavaScript enabled.

What’s the quickest way to a young voter’s heart? Hosting a benefit concert with homegrown hip-hop superstar Lupe Fiasco, perhaps? Looking to secure the lower age bracket in the February 2nd primary elections for a seat in the U.S. Senate, Democratic hopeful Cheryle Jackson was the guest of honor at Thursday night’s show. But the crowd seemed more interested in seeing Lupe than any of Jackson’s politics.

I’d never been to the Shrine before, so I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The club is, in a word, sleek. The decor is au courant and the space is roomy with two bars, one of which resides beneath the stage like some kind of backward orchestra pit. The downers here are the mandatory $4 coat check and the apparent disregard for any typical concert schedule I’ve ever encountered. The show was supposed to start at 9pm but didn’t get rolling until well past 10. And when I say get going, I mean at least three opening acts and an emcee doing everything from R&B jams about getting cavities to a song about 140-character hook-ups called “Twitter Me Baby.” As the crowd grew progressively drunker and more restless, there was an audible groan from the audience as the emcee appeared around midnight to deliver the bad news. Lupe wouldn’t come on until after a 15 minute intermission. But, as these things tend to happen, when Lupe finally took the stage, his energy blew in a second wind and as he dove into “Kick, Push,” all was forgiven.

Metra set to raise some fares Monday

January 31, 2010 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Fab Local News

Metra riders who buy one-way tickets or use weekend passes will be paying a little more starting Monday. So will passengers who don’t get a ticket at the station and end up buying a ticket from the conductor.

Most Metra users won’t see a difference in what they pay. About 79 percent of riders use ten-ride tickets and monthly passes, officials said, and those prices will not increase.

One-way tickets will cost an average of 6 percent more, depending on distance. The per ticket increase will range from 10 cents to 45 cents for the furthest zone.

The cost of weekend passes will rise from $5 to $7. This is the first time Metra has increased that fare since 1991.

The charge for buying a ticket from the conductor on the train will increase from $3 to $2; there will be no additional charge for passengers who board at stations that don’t have a ticket-seller.

Metra says the increases will raise about $6 million a year.

You can find more detail on the increases on Metra’s Web site.
