2 hurt in Woodstock apartment building fire
Two people were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition, after a fire Sunday evening in a northwest suburban WoodstockWoodstock reviews
apartment building, fire officials said.
The fire also displaced residents in the 36-unit building for at least one night, Woodstock Fire Department Lt. Brendan Parker said. It’s up to the building owners when to let residents back in, he said. In the meantime, the American Red Cross has arranged for residents to stay at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 401 St. John’s Rd.
The fire began between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. in a third-floor unit of the building in the 1900 block of Sheila Street, Parker said.
“It looks like (the fire started) in the bedroom, but we don’t know what exactly caused it,” he said, adding that the blaze doesn’t appear suspicious.
The fire was confined to the third-floor apartment, but the door to the unit was open, allowing smoke and water to seep into the hallway and cause damage, Parker said.
One person was inside the one-bedroom apartment, which is completely uninhabitable, and was taken to Centegra Hospital in Woodstock in critical condition, Parker said. A second person from a different unit was sent to the same hospital with minor injuries, Parker said. He did not have more details about the injured residents.
The building did not have sprinklers, but the fire alarm was working, Parker said.
About a dozen fire departments responded to the blaze, which was under control in about 15 minutes, Parker said.
