Burglars botch attempt to dig into jewelry store

police are searching for a pair of industrious burglars who broke into Dilshad’s Hair Design in the West Rogers Park neighborhood Monday evening and made off with shampoo.
But police believe the robbers were after much bigger loot. The ultimate target was NP Jewelers next door at 2647 West Devon Ave., said Rogers Park District Lt. John Franklin.
Taking a page from many Hollywood movie scripts, the burglars tried to dig a hole through the brick wall separating the businesses, said Franklin. But the hole wasn’t big enough for them to fit through before an alarm sounded, he said.
“They broke through the wall and that set off the motion detector alarm
in the jewelry store,” said Franklin. “They (the store) had a loud siren alarm
that may have tripped them up, something spooked them.”
Police believe the suspects are from the area and put some thought into the caper.
At about 8:30 p.m., before breaking into the salon, police
believe they used a stick to push a video camera positioned over the
back door of the jewelry store so it pointed away, Franklin said. The
camera recorded the suspects using a stick to reposition the lens.
“They had scoped it out,” Franklin said.
He said police think the robbers began working on the wall
of the hair salon at about 9:30 p.m. and broke through about 10 minutes later. The motion detector alarm went off about 10 minutes after that, forcing them to abandon their quest.
Police said two individuals were seen getting into a sedan in the alley
and driving east. Police believe the car may be a white Honda, Franklin
said.
Police are investigating and no one was in custody, Franklin said.
