A 24-year-old man was killed and another man wounded during a street fight early this morning in the Lawndale neighborhood.

police responded to numerous calls about a fight involving 30 to 40 people in the 4200 block of West Cermak Road. When they arrived, police said they found the 24-year-old shot in the back and a 39-year-old man with a graze wound to his head.
The shooting victims were both taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where the 24-year-old, Darryl Brown, of the 2300 block of South Kolin Avenue, was pronounced dead.
No arrests had been made as Harrison Area detectives continued to investigate the homicide.

AP – A 112-year-old Somali man has married a 17-year-old girl, BBC reported on Thursday.
The wedding took place in the village of Guriceel in central Somalia, one of the poorest countries in the world.
Ahmed Muhamed Dore already has 18 children from five wives. He said he would like to have more children
with his new teenage wife, Safia Abdulleh, who is young enough to be his great-great-granddaughter.
“Today God helped me realize my dream,” Dore said after the wedding ceremony in the region of Galguduud.
“I didn’t force her, but used my experience to convince her of my love; and then we agreed to marry,” Dore continued, adding that he had waited for his wife to grow up first before proposing to her.
Safia’s family said their daughter is “happy with her new husband,” a man who survived Italian colonization, British occupation, Siad Barre dictatorship and Somalia’s dissolution.

If you haven’t heard yet, Warner Brothers is currently in putting together an Aaliyah biopic. I think this is a really good idea, her story reminds me a lot of the late Selena. After seeing and loving Notorious, I would love to know more about Aaliyah. The movie will get into all the aspects of Aaliyah’s life and they are putting in a lot of money to make this movie (averaging to about 80 million dollars). The woman casted to play Aaliyah is Canadian R&B singer/actress Keisha Chante. I heard that Meagan Good wanted to play the role, but I guess that didn’t work out. Chante does resemble Aaliyah a bit more than Meagan Good. Now I wonder who is going to play R.Kelly (lol).

Sphere: Related ContentMen walking about in Langley should be wary after a woman viciously kicked a man in the groin, causing him to lose a testicle.
“I just want to know what her problem is,” Anthony Clark, 22, told The Province Tuesday. “People like her shouldn’t be on the streets.”
Clark was walking along 200th Avenue in the Brookswood area of Langley one afternoon in early September when he passed his assailant on the sidewalk.
“I was looking down and then I took a passing glance and saw her walk up to me,” he said.
That’s when the young woman inexplicably kicked him in the groin hard enough to send one of his testicles into his abdomen.
Clark wasn’t aware of the severity of his injury until later that night when he “noticed something was missing.”
He consulted his doctor and a specialist, both of whom believed his testicle could be brought down again in surgery.
It wasn’t until he woke up afterwards that he discovered the doctors were wrong – the force of the assault had caused his testicle to rupture. It had to be removed and will be replaced by a prosthetic before Christmas.
“My doctors say I will still be able to have children,” Clark said. “But at 22 that’s not something I want a stranger, this woman, to decide.” [source via O Hell Nawl]
Man Arrested For The Murder of Rapper TI’s Best Friend & Assistant!

The 2006 shooting death of T.I.’s best friend and personal assistant, Philant Johnson, shook the rapper to his core. After a fight at a club in Cincinnati, T.I. and his entourage left in a fleet of vans to escape the escalating situation. While trying to leave amicably, the rapper and his crew were chased down and their cars were sprayed with bullets. The senseless act of violence left three people injured and Philant Johnson dead. Three years later, justice is finally being served.
41-year-old Padron Thomas, who was the driver of the opposing vehicle, pleaded guilty to manslaughter Wednesday. Initially charged with murder, Thomas received a lesser sentence after he testified against his brother. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for November 17th, where Thomas could face up to 10 years in prison. He’s currently serving 17 years on unrelated federal drug charges.
His brother, Hosea Thomas, was sentenced to 66 years to life for the shooting. The convicted murderer will not be eligible for parole until 2074 when he’s 100 years old.(Source)

Chicago police were searching for two men reported missing separately in the city today.

Floyd Carberry, 80, of the 3000 block of South Lowe Avenue was last seen today on the 600 block of West 31st Street, police said in a community alert. He might be mentally confused and may need help.
Carberry was described as white, 6 feet, 165 pounds, with grey hair, blue eyes and a light complexion, according to the alert. Anyone with information about Carberry is asked to call the Wentworth Area Special Victims Unit at 312-747-8385.
Edward Skrzyszowski, 72, address not available, was last seen by a neighbor about 10 a.m. today entering his red 2000 Volvo sedan with Illinois license plate X158744. He was supposed to pick up his wife at her work on the 4200 block of West Grand Avenue but never arrived, police said.
Skrzyszowski is on blood pressure medicine and can become disoriented. He has a prosthetic leg, and has been reported missing three times in the past, police said.
Anyone with information on Skrzyszowski is asked to call the Grand-Central Area Special Victims Unit at 312-746-8365. As of about 5:30 p.m. neither man had been found, Police News Affairs said.

Prosecutors: Wife was killed to cover up rape

A mother of three young children found dead in a trunk was killed to keep her from telling police about being raped by her husband’s brother and to collect on an insurance policy, prosecutors said today.
The new details emerged as the woman’s husband, Darron Brewer, 22, was denied bail for his alleged role in the slaying of his wife, Kenyatae Collier-Brewer.
Brewer admitted in a videotaped confession to planning and carrying out the killing with his brother, Dujuan Powe, 20, prosecutors said.
Powe is charged first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm, and is due in Bond Court Saturday.
Brewer reported his wife missing and told police he spotted her Chevrolet Monte Carlo Monday night in an alley in the 2200 block of North Tripp Avenue. Inside the trunk, authorities discovered Collier-Brewer, shot twice in the head.
Collier-Brewer was a nursing assistant at the Alden Northmoor Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, and left behind daughter Darriona, 1, and two sons, Darron, 9 months, and Donte, 4.
Brewer and Powe began plotting to kill Collier-Brewer after she threatened to go to the police about the rape, prosecutors stated in court documents today. Brewer and Powe planned to fake a carjacking, Assistant State’s Atty. Jodi Peterson said in court.
Around 11 a.m. Sunday, Brewer, his wife and the two younger children drove to a gas station, where Brewer prepaid and began pumping gas, Peterson said. Powe then came up wearing a mask from the movie “Scream” and indicated he had a gun.
Brewer and Powe got into the Monte Carlo, and Brewer drove from the station, Peterson said. They stopped and Powe ordered Collier-Brewer into the trunk, and they drove off again, Peterson said. While on the Dan Ryan Expressway, the trunk popped open and Powe got out of the car and closed it, according to court documents.
Brewer and Powe drove to the family home, and Brewer got out of the car with the two children and went into the house, prosecutors said. Powe took Collier-Brewer to another location and shot her twice in the head as he crouched in the trunk, Peterson said.
The car was found in the 2200 block of North Tripp Avenue late Monday, prosecutors said.
Investigators found a .380-caliber handgun at the house of the Powe’s girlfriend. When it was test-fired by the Illinois State Police Crime Lab, the bullets matched those found in the victim, prosecutors said.
As Peterson detailed the plot, Collier-Brewer’s mother began crying and rushed to the back of the spectator gallery, where she was joined by one of Collier-Brewer’s aunts who comforted her.
The family said Collier-Brewer had been injured at least twice in the last year, but the couple explained then away as accidents.
Last year, while pregnant with her son, she was shot at the stairwell of her family’s apartment, according to Collier-Brewer’s aunt, Bess Jones. Most recently, Collier-Brewer suffered cuts to her face. She told her family someone had thrown a bottle at her while inside of her vehicle.
“Every time something happened, he was around,” Jones said. “He thought he was a mastermind, he thought he was unstoppable. He would have to to think he could do this,” Jones said.
According to court records, Brewer pleaded guilty on Dec. 5, 2005 to one count of defrauding a financial institution. Brewer was sentenced to one year of court supervision and was ordered to perform four days of community service, working for the Cook County sheriff’s work alternative program.

CNN Throws Out Idea That Dems Might Be Better Off If They Lose NJ & VA

On Friday’s Situation Room, CNN forwarded an idea proposed by The New Republic’s Peter Beinart- that Democratic losses in the gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey this year would result in the reelection of President Obama in 2012. An on-screen graphic during a discussion of Beinart’s hypothesis read, “If The Dems Lose Next Week: How it might help them in the long run.”
Anchor Wolf Blitzer read the New Republic contributor’s idea during a “Strategy Session” panel discussion with Republican Mary Matalin and Democrat Paul Begala 53 minutes into the 4 pm Eastern hour: “Peter Beinart, writing in The Daily Beast, says…it might be good for the Democrats if the Republicans win both Virginia and New Jersey, the governors’ races next Tuesday. ‘Let’s imagine,’ he writes, ‘that Democrats lose next week because the GOP’s conservative base flocks to the polls while liberals stay home. For Obama, that wouldn’t be so terrible. The more confident right-wing Republicans become, the more likely they will nominate a Palin-like zealot in 2012.’”
Beinart sounds like he’s channeling ABC’s Clare Shipman, who, after President Obama’s trip to Copenhagen failed to secure the Olympics for Chicago, bizarrely argued that this loss was actually good for the Democrat.
Both Matalin and Begala didn’t buy this hypothesis one bit:
BLITZER: You like his [Beinart’s] logic there?
MARY MATLALIN: It’s an argument supported neither by logic nor data. He argues that off-year elections are not predictive for mid-terms or subsequent presidential elections unless there’s a Republican victory which portends a negative impact on the next election. That’s illogical on its face, but it’s not supported by data either. These are not conservatives of any ilk, either, of his description, ‘kooky’ conservatives or [unintelligible] common sense conservatives. It is independents that are flocking away from the Democrats because they do not like the – those very voters that swept Obama in and expanded the Democratic majority- they do not like the aforementioned expansive government.
BLITZER: Paul?
MATALIN: They do not like the debt. In New York 23 [the New York 23rd congressional district race], there wasn’t a run on conservative social issues. It was on the debt, and that’s why Hoffman got in and that’s why independents are flocking to him.
BLITZER: All right. Very quickly, Paul- go ahead.
PAUL BEGALA: Well, the debt, of course, was created by the Republicans, and Bill Clinton, who I worked for, left the White House- he handed President Bush the greatest surplus in American history. But the interesting- I think Peter Beinart is wrong. He is a very smart guy, but he’s wrong. Mary is correct about that. It’s never good to lose, and Democrats shouldn’t think it’s good if they lose.
I’m watching Virginia, because it’s a test run of what a lot of Democrats like to do. They seem to believe in the politics of differentiation: ‘Oh, I’m different from Obama.’ Creigh Deeds, the Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia, says- would not say that he’s an Obama Democrat. He, in fact, then came out and said if the public option is passed and states can opt out, I would probably opt out. So he’s running away from Barack Obama, in a state Obama won by six points. Let’s see how that works out for him. My guess is he loses by ten points or more by trying to separate himself from his party’s president.
Neither Matalin nor Begala addressed the second part of Beinart’s theory, which concerned the viability of a “Palin-like zealot,” or, more plainly, a conservative presidential candidate for the Republican Party. But it’s certainly interesting to watch the two of them throw cold water on the hypothesis CNN seems to be forwarding.

WLS-Ch. 7 will upgrade its signal on Saturday evening, hoping to reach the last remaining viewers who couldn’t get the station’s broadcast after the June transition from analog to digital broadcasts.
The signal upgrade, which will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, is meant to be a permanent fix to a problem that has pestered WLS since the summer.
“We don’t think it’s a huge number (of affected people), but we don’t really know,” said Emily Barr, president and general manager at WLS. “We take calls regularly. The calls have lightened up as the summer’s gone on, but we do know there are people out there who have not been able to receive us despite their best efforts.”
Viewers who have been receiving WLS don’t need to do anything, nor do cable TV and satellite subscribers, Barr said. But those who haven’t been getting the signal or experience spotty reception must do a hard reset, also known as a double rescan, of their converter box or television. This should be done after 5 p.m. on Saturday. Instructions for a double rescan can be found at http://www.dtv.gov/rescan.html.
The Federal Communications Commission had given WLS permission in early September to effectively double its power on a temporary basis. Since then, the FCC has approved a request by WLS to pick up a second frequency, adding Ch. 44 on UHF to its current home at Ch. 7 on VHF. The additional frequency will be translated to Ch. 7.
Before the digital transition on June 12, WLS had been at Ch. 52 on UHF. The signal upgrade required significant new construction, including securing additional space in the Sears Tower, Barr said.
Cops ask for help finding South Side teen’s killer

Police today asked for help in finding the killer of a 17-year-old South SideSouth Side reviews
boy, slain last weekend as he sat in a car with his younger brother.
Dequarrius D. Cannon was shot in the head as he sat in the driver’s seat of a rental Nissan Rogue outside a friend’s house in the 10500 block of South Peoria Street last Saturday. Police said that about 9:15 p.m., a man walked up to the car and demanded Cannon’s valuables before firing a shot.
Cannon’s younger brother, visiting from Iowa, got behind the wheel and drove back to his grandmother Kathleen Crittenden’s nearby home in the 10700 block of South Green Street, where Cannon also lived. There, Crittenden attempted to resuscitate her grandson and cradled him in her arms until paramedics arrived.
“I prayed, but I knew there was no life in his body,” Crittenden said on Sunday.
Police today issued a community alert asking for the public’s help in finding Cannon’s killer and anyone who may have assisted in the slaying. Calumet Area detectives issued a description of the man or boy who shot Cannon.
The killer is described as a black male, between 17 and 25 years old, 5-foot-9 to 6 feet tall, thin with a dark complexion, clean shaven and short braids or dreads. At the time of the shooting he was wearing a grey zip-up hooded sweatshirt or jacket.
